2020 Democratic Presidential Nominees

That guy scares the shit out of Sailor’s spank bank No.1 for sure. Fought in a war and got a real degree by working hard not ‘cause his daddy bought it. Scary shit, man. I like the Bootyszesz guy too

Uhh, the former Insurance Commissioner from the State of Florida who founded some nonprofit no one's ever heard of is not that significant. Cherie Berry would be a bigger endorsement.

Significant for the mayor of South Bend. He almost got an elected office higher than the person he’s endorsing.

Buttigieg seems sharp and has a bright future, but Dem's aren't going to coalesce around a 30 something mayor for President.

Could happen. I said the same thing when he first started running, but I've really taken to the guy. Not saying I'm definitely voting for him - just that I like and admire the guy. Everybody I've been interested in has crashed and burned thus far. Started out being interested in the governors, but Hickenlooper is a bit goofy, and Inslee and Bullock have gotten no traction. Then some folks here got me on the Beto train, but he is a fading empty suit. Then I got on the Klobuchar train, which proceeded to never leave the station. Then liked Harris until her anti free trade stance. So now Pete is my current flavor of the week. But basically, I'll vote for whoever the alternative to Bernie is come the winter. Right now, that's Biden, but by then it could be Buttigieg. The man has talent.

Why?

From what I’ve seen, everybody who knows about him likes him except for scared Bernie Bros. He’s got plenty of appeal across party elements. He’s new and fresh. He’s smart. He’s the only one I’ve seen so far with the potential to sell progressive policies beyond the progressive audience.

Getting an endorsement from Sean Shaw was a big get. Shaw won a competitive Dem primary which should help Pete win his. Shaw has a strong support from Tampa Democrats which is a must get for the primary. Gillum and Nelson probably won’t endorse soon. Same with AG commish Nikki Fried. Getting the first endorsement from the statewide 2018 Dem is definitely big and helps counter the “Pete struggles with black voters” narrative.

I doubt he'll win the Dem nomination this year (I just can't see a 37-year-old winning), but he's got a great future. His main weakness is that he's a progressive Democrat in Indiana, not a state known for favoring progressives in statewide elections. His problem is similar to Beto's in Texas - they're both young, articulate, charismatic rising stars in the Democratic Party, but they're both living in dark red states where it's very difficult for a Democrat to win statewide office. If either of them can break through, they would instantly become much stronger presidential material than they currently are, imo.

Let’s not kid around, his main weakness isnt his age it’s that he’s a gay dude. Lots of so called moderate Americans still out there who can’t envision a couple of dudes banging it out in the Lincoln bedroom

His other main weakness is that he’s the 37-year old mayor of the fourth largest city in an insignificant state.

I keep thinking Pete is too young and too gay and will never win. But then I listen to him speak and I hear a future president. I think he has Obama like capacity to inspire people. He’s not as inspirational as Obama, but he seems to be the best the Dems have right now. I think Warren maybe has it too, but her voice quivers when she gets excited or emotional and it undermines her strength.

The Pubs killed the inexperienced and unqualified argument when the nominated and elected a reality tv star to the White House.

I agree. As soon as this godforsaken country sheds its frightened redneck population through death-attrition brought on by eating its shit diet and the stress of suppressing love and empathy, intelligent and forward-thinking people like Buttigieg and AOC will end up running the place.

Disagree. Pete could get the nomination and people still wouldn’t know who he is, let alone vote for him.

That’s a very important skill, IMO.

Ph, what progressive policies has Pete sold to non-progressive audiences? What is he doing that, say, Liz Warren isn't in regards to "selling" progressive policies?

I thought 30% of Bernie voters went for Trump? That's a lot of right wing pubs sucking at the bountiful teat of socialism, no?

Those are the wrong questions in response to my post. Keep in mind I said potential. Also, there's something about what each is doing, but it's more about where each stands with the public.

The big thing is plenty of people have already made up their minds about Warren. Much of that has been colored by how Republicans have portrayed her. I think if she had run in 2016, she could have told her own story more instead of the Republicans telling it for her. So many people just don't like her and she has a very difficult task getting them to like her. She's starting from a deficit. She's working her way out of it with policy and that's fine because that's her brand. I think she's doing a good job telling her story and I think it will pay off with progressives. Not sure if it will work on the right.

Pete is trying to work the values angle. He understands that policy specifics are important, but voters don't like politicians for their policies. People like policies if they like the politician, especially people who aren't that political. That why Trump remains popular with some voters despite doing exactly what he said he wasn't going to do on the campaign trail.

Pete is a blank slate. People generally like him. Republicans are struggling trying to figure out how to portray him. They're sticking with the usual "he's too liberal" argument. He is selling people on himself and explaining how he (and the Democrats) share their values. That's why his policies are organized under freedom, security, and democracy. Not sure if it's going to work but it's a step in the right direction.
