2020 Democratic Presidential Nominees

You really are an idiot. You do realize that the idea is to try to get more people to vote for the side closer to you than to take some perverse pleasure in convincing yourself from your ivory tower that they are going to disagree with you and trying to drive them away to that point?

I could write the same thing to you.

Also, I'm impressed with your latest "ivory tower" dig. You're well on your way towards jhmd and Colonel Angus territory!

I get the appeal of Biden.

Biden is the "not Trump" vote

Biden is the "return to normal" vote

But that normal was still really shitty for a lot of people

Biden is the vote that thinks Trump is the problem

Biden is the vote that brings "If Hillary had won, we'd be at brunch" signs to marches

Biden is the vote of white liberalism that wants everyone to know that they are one of the good ones who get it and who say all the right things, but don't want to give up any of their privilege to stand in solidarity with the vulnerable

Biden is the vote that likes programs, but doesn't want to look too hard at underlying systems

Biden very well may the person who stacks up against Trump the best. But he's not the best candidate. And he's not the only candidate who can match Trump. Beating Trump isn't the only objective, and in the primary phase, I want to find the best person to lead the country. If Biden wins the primary, so be it. I'll vote for him and most likely campaign for him (at the very least put a lot of energy into GOTV and voter access initiatives). But I don't see him as being the best president of those in the field.

TITCR

See, it's not that hard, Chris and DeacMan (welcome back!) and without the unnecessary "fucks" and "idiots."

Not even close. But you have pretty much landed in the M-deac range. No socialists for you!!!

It's funny that you're calling me a socialist when none of my preferred candidates are socialists.

Maybe sailor is onto something with the Trump Derangement Syndrome digs, ya lube. The brain worms appear to have found a new home. At least sailor still posts coherently on the sports board, though.

You are a legend in your own mind and nobody elses.

Let me ask you some questions, Chris. They may involve a broader vocabulary than your new "idiot" "ivory tower" sailorisms, but here goes:

How do you feel about the likes of Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Kristen Gillibrand, and Pete Buttigieg? Do they have policies that you like? What are they? Do you think they can beat Trump? Why or why not?

They all have some policies that I like. I would vote for any of them H2H against Trump. I am not going to go through a laundry list of their positions, but I would agree with Warren in many aspects of drug policy, immigration, certain aspects of trade policy, election reform. Fundamentally we both think we need some level of universal healthcare, although I think M4A isn't realistic or feasible.

And even though I think her tax policies are awful (even though I think there are areas where taxes could and should be raised), I would vote for her over Trump in a second, because I think she respects the rule of law fundamentally.

Since she and Bernie are my least favorites, you can imagine that I find more common ground with the rest.

Thanks for sharing.

What do you like about Harris, Gillibrand, and Buttigieg?

Biden was Obama’s VP. That’s going to hurt him with a large majority of GOP voters. They still hate Obama and think he is still the most corrupt president in American history.

It doesn't need to be alot. All you need are a couple of percent at the margins and to win moderates. Most Pubs are going to vote for Pubs and they will generally turnout.

Which is why Democrats need to motivate the base, not to mention getting some down ballot momentum for Senate races like Obama did.

Seems like a person who's motivating the Rust Belt base and minorities the most is Biden

Biden is the default. Haven’t seen any evidence he is motivating anyone. Hillary “motivated” minorities until Obama won in Iowa.

Obama was within 10 of clinton by now. I thought harris would get more traction but it hasn't happened yet.

I’d much rather have the “Biden isn’t progressive enough” debate from a 2024 Democratic primary where President Biden has to answer his 4 year stint if I’m being perfectly honest. I don’t want Biden to be the candidate but if the greater Democratic voter base selects him, then I’m getting on board no questions asked.

I wish she was getting more traction too. I think it’s just messaging and PR at this point, if she has a solid first debate I think she will see a bump. But she has not been able to get a “Harris: [insert quote or position here]” headline recently that really captures people.

I just don’t think people care much at this point. I can only think of one face to face conversation I’ve had about the primary. I have pretty politically aware friends that I regularly talk politics with and the primary race just hasn’t come up. Had my birthday party two weeks ago and my libertarian friend who is always willing to talk politics didn’t mention it. I was at a conference full of “ivory tower elites” last month and it didn’t come up either.

The field is quite strong and I think people will support whoever wins. The only people who are dead set on their candidate and actively bashing other candidates seem to Bernie people.
