Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

Tempted to head to BOA Stadium today just out of curiosity since Canada plays Cuba at 6 pm and Mexico plays Martinique at 8:30.

This England Cameroon game could get ugly in the 2nd half. Cameroon could have been given an early red for an elbow. I think they were harshly called for a back pass to the keeper which was actually a poor trap. England scored on the indirect set piece. Then England are awarded a goal which was originally called offside. Cameroon team then refused to play for about 4 minutes before beating officials afterward at halftime.

Oh look VAR takes way another goal due to a subjective decision after the fact. Glad its against the French, because as an American I would love for the Brazilians to pull off the upset here.

We should have smothered replay in its cradle a long time ago. It is going to ruin sport.

Over/under 2.5 years before VAR breaks are filled with commercials/advertising?

Yeah, I went in without much of a preference, but I found myself rooting big time for Brazil as the game wore on. And at least the 2nd VAR goal review was correct.

"The US has not conceded a goal in the last 600+ minutes"

3 seconds later, Spain score

Of all the commentators curse i've seen in sport, this one may have been the worst.

Personal fave is BBC Match of the Day commentator saying "ASTON VILLA ARE HEADED TO THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!" when they were 2-0 up on Stoke in '08-09, a result that would've put them eight points clear of 5th place with 11 to go.

Stoke scored two late goals to draw the match and Villa then proceeded to fail to win their next seven matches, and fell 11 points shy of the UCL

Heath is so good. That control and touch was brilliant. I'm also liking Lavelle the more I see her. But I continue to say Naeher sucks. That pass to Sauerbrun was the equivalent to a buddy pass to your RB over the middle as he's about to get laid out by the MLB. Then she had another scary pass a few minutes later. Ellis should just tell her that, if no one is completely wide open, just bomb it deep. We're not going to concede a goal by kicking it to the other half of the field.

Agreed, Naeher is pretty bad, but that was more on Sauerbrun than her IMO. She had ample time to clean that up and did absolutely nothing with it.

Heath levelle and ertz are all great. Need to get the ball to Morgan more, she disappears a lot. Rapinoe is doing very little with a lot of opportunities.

Disagree. Naeher put it where the Sauerbrun's back was to the Spanish player and was blindsided. Naeher has to take that into consideration as someone already said she needs to make sure there is ample space for defenders or if going to put into a tighter space she at least has to insure her defender is in a position to have clear sight of threats around them. Sauerbrun clearly didn't as her back was to the girl so she didn't rush to clean it up as she normally would have had known of her presence.

To make matters worse Naeher was like a deer in the headlights in dead man zone after giving it up. She should have either charged the ball or quickly backed up to her line. Way to easy and definitely shakes the confidence of US team in Naeher.
