The 2019 College Football Thread ! LSU NATIONAL CHAMPIONS ! CLEMSON SUCKS !!!!!!!!!!!

You just got done debating Biff for pages attacking the idea that preconceived notions about who is best should matter vs on field results and now you turn around and say that a 7 game series doesn't necessarily tell you who is THE best team?

Post 2689 and 2691:

I'm trying to come up with a straight forward process that settles it on the field, not in people's minds

You seem to want a system that corrects the results on the field if they don't line up with your Biff rankings.

Post 2705:

Obviously one of the top two or three teams generally wins the NBA Championship but THE top team? Not so much.

I didn't watch the show but it looks like the committe will forgive a loss, especially a bad loss, if you go out and play somebody. So Georgia's wins over ND and Florida somewhat offset the loss to USC. Likewise, Alabama punished for not playing anybody OOC.

Bama is 5th despite playing an awful schedule and having no wins of any real value. It's hard to see how they were punished for not playing anyone OOC. If not for the eye test and history, Bama would be 9th or 10th.

Yeah, if good wins matter more than losses (see UGA), Minnesota should definitely be ahead of Bama. Bama has nothing on its resume close to a victory over PSU, and Minnesota has no losses. Hell, PSU should still be above Bama. At least PSU has a few good wins and a not-bad loss. But, #eyetest.

Fair enough as long as you concede that Minnesota has only one win of any value. Alabama, to meat least, looked better in a loss than Minnesota did in a win. It seems clear that Minnesota is only getting in if they go undefeated, although it would be interesting if they had a close and only loss to tOSU to compare with Alabama's close and only loss to LSU. Minnesota's performance in September would probably keep them out.

Oregon/Utah, one-loss PAC12 champion would probably jump Alabama too since they get that extra game and conference championship.

Also, I just wanted to point out to everyone that I am not actually on the committee.

I just tweeted the following reply to a Georgia football account with 126.1K followers talking about the dominance of the Georgia defense.

Tennessee - Backup QB eventually replaced by former starter
South Carolina - 2 backup QBs
Kentucky - Backup QB
Florida - Backup QB who should've been the starter
Mizzou - Backup QB

They played well enough against Ian Book though.

Pray for me.

You're not on the committee, but you are representative of how the committee thinks. I agree with you that Minnesota's schedule has been poor and that it only has one high value win. It still on actual accomplishment should be ahead of Bama.

I think Minnesota loses at Iowa this week and the issue will be moot but the rankings this week are illustrative of the fact that eye test and SEC history are significant components of the committee's analysis.

So take the history out and just apply eye test. Obviously you can see that Alabama is better than Minnesota because there's no way you'd be picking Alabama to lose at Iowa this weekend.

You're getting DANGEROUSLY close to losing one of your 17 twitter followers !

I don't know man, I think my 9 Russian model friends will stick by me.

The current CFP ratings are irrelevant. Everyone doubts Minnesota because they have been an college football afterthought for decades and they played like crap to start the year. For Minnesota to get in, they will have to beat Iowa, Wisconsin and then tOSU in the Big 10CG. Really unlikely, but if they do that, the deserve to be in as they will be undefeated and have multiple quality wins.

I know who Biff is now. Cool beans.

Why not have the CFP include all one-loss P5 teams plus all undefeated teams from any conference, provided they played at least two P5 teams. Looking at past results, that puts around 5-6 teams in the playoffs every year. If one of the "best" teams loses more than one game, it's just like one of top seeded basketball teams losing in the tourney - no chance at a championship, but still a great season. This would allow everything to be settled on the field. No more whining from teams that think they're the "best" despite having lost two or more games in a short season.

So an undefeated App St team whose best win is UNC deserves to be in the playoff more than a 2 loss Auburn who only loses close games to LSU and Bama and wins the SEC (lets say)? That's silly.

I still haven't heard anything close to as good as the 8 team playoff with 5 conf champs, 1 G5 champ, 2 at large.

That methodology would discourage competitive OOC games, and then everyone would play Bama's lame OOC schedule, as teams get penalized for losses rather than rewarded for good wins. Auburn could end up this season with wins over Oregon, UGA and Bama; yet, they would be ineligible for a 6 or 8 team playoff because they lost two games, while App would get in for beating UNC and S. Carolina and literally no else? Seems flawed.

On eye test, my assumption is that Bama's better but what you and I assume shouldn't guide the analysis. Bama has to actually beat someone. Otherwise, just give them a bye to the playoffs every year.

Hard to argue with this response.

Tennesee wasnt the backup dumbass he won the starting apot lol south carolina also wSnt the backup until later in the game hake bentley wasnt even on the team anymore bc he was ass. UF has the QB they wanted. Quit hating

I really don't like the idea of expanding the playoffs just so we can let the #17 team in the country get blown out on New Years Day because they won the MAC and a 10-3 Washington can test Alabama.

I like expanding the playoffs because I like more football. I think that a G5 team should get in but with a caveat - they have to be in the top 12 or something similar. I would have liked to see UCF have a shot a couple of years ago, and there have been some great teams that would have come out of that group - like the TCU, Boise St., and Utah teams from the late 2000s.

Also probably controversial, but I think that the amount of teams in an expanded playoff should be limited to two from the same conference. I like seeing different conferences play and different styles go against each other. The Wake/A&M game from a couple of years ago was one of the most exciting bowl games in recent history.

On that thread, I gave a pretty straight forward explanation why the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or whatever best team in the NBA would win a playoff over the best team. tim clearly misrepresented what I said. Feel free to play that game too but it's wrong.
