Official 2020 NBA Offseason - First Half Season Schedule Out

The sixers were a freak bounce away from OT in game 7 against last year’s champs and this year’s team has a better bench and improvements on D. Ben has a long way to go on his halfcourt game but the criticism he takes, and the way it’s framed on how the Sixers are affected, is so overblown. I’ve watched almost every minute of Sixer basketball this year (do not recommend this), and I can say he’s an improved player again and has the capacity to grow more.

The more frustrating thing to me than not shooting is that he doesn’t really try to dunk in traffic. He does a hook or layin or finger roll or fade-away but there’s really no reason he can’t just dunk on like 95% of the league. I definitely agree that he needs to shoot. My dream is a day where he goes 0/2 from three. What a day that would be. But it’s not as serious as KOC and the Cus Crise Crew want to make it.

the biggest problem with the sixers is that embid is lazy

Sixers didn't get better losing JJ Redick and Jimmy Butler

Sure they did. Butler doesn’t shoot most of the time either, needs too much of the ball, and takes weeks off at a time. JJ doesn’t defend. The sixers starting five with the two of them last year was the best in the league net rtg and guess what, so is the sixers starting five this year. Richardson and Horford are way better defensively and both can shoot.

Obviously losing Jimmy means losing the end of game guy, and losing JJ means losing one of the best three point shooters in the league and a guy who runs around like crazy. The sixers have missed both of them no question. But Horford can guard Giannis (Butler certainly can’t) and Richardson is a huuuge defensive upgrade on Redick and not a big drop off in scoring.

Unfortunately he followed that up with an 0/7 last night.

The most frustrating thing is that the Sixers' coach doesn't have enough balls to get the PG concept out of Simmons' head and simply make him play PF. But because some Crocodile Hunter told him 15 years ago that he should be a PG, that is supposed to hold true in the NBA? It is like if somebody told Blake Griffin in middle school that he should play PG, and NBA coaches were still deferring to that advice. They are basically the same fucking player, but one plays his correct position and the other doesn't. But he is the same coach who is still content to let Embiid jack threes instead of planting his ass in the post and dominating every possession, so I guess it is to be expected.

Referring to the conversation about best coaches, would any one of those coaches continue to let Simmons play PG? Not a goddamn single one of them would. Tim was the best ball handler on our 96-97 team by a mile, did Pop say oh shit, here is our 6'11" PG of the future? No, he said get your ass in the paint next to the other guy your size. This is nothing but gross mismanagement of the roster by Brown.

Ingram, Siakam, Brown, Sabonis, Hield, Simmons, Murray

wow, ingram first? that seems bonkers to me. i think i would put him last based on his profile as good individual player who will struggle to fit on a winning team, like the worst player of all time antawn jamison.

The concept of positions doesn’t matter that much any more in the NBA, so 2&2’s take is pretty cold, but in case you don’t watch much Sixers, Simmons is the best ball handler in the starting five, so it makes sense he is the primary ball handler on the break and in the full court. But you’ll notice that against most teams that aren’t zoning or Boston, he’s very good at breaking down a defense off dribble, so he does have primary originator role in the halfcourt a lot of the time too. But against teams that are trying to clog the lane, Tobias does a lot of primary ball handling. An issue losing Jimmy is the lack of a true pick and roll scorer, Josh isn’t really a perfect replacement for that. And JJ and Jo had the dribble hand off that was the most efficient offensive set in the league last year, and there isn’t a like for like with that either. The one offensive set where the Sixers truly need Ben to shoot is when he’s in the corner and the ball gets to him in rhythm and he’s got the open three. That is a shot teams work really hard to get because it’s such a high percentage play, and in the modern NBA you’ve got to be able to hit that shot at least 30% of the time no matter who you are. Ben doesn’t need to develop a perfect catch and shoot, he just needs to be willing to take that corner three and not shy away at end of games from receiving the ball for fear of getting fouled. Those are really the two things, in a long game where he’s pretty damn elite at every other aspect, that he must improve on. All the rest is bullshit. Giannis has gotten less efficient listening to the “he’s gotta get a shot” crowd. Hope the team doesn’t force it.

Show your work on this best net rating in the league stat plz

He’s the only guy on that list that can consistently get his own shot and has a ton of positional versatility. He has never really had a chance to contribute on a good team, so I’m not ready to label him Antawn yet, though he definitely has the makings of becoming this type of guy if he can’t get decent coaching in the next few years. I’m also really high on Ingram and have been for awhile. He can do some really unique things at his size.

Looks like they’re at 11th among 5 man rotations with > 100 min together this year and last year was 8th

I’ll take it up with the Lowe post podcast a couple weeks ago where I heard it. There must have been another stipulation I missed. Regardless not much of a dropoff in net rtg between the two 5s.

With that many stars, they should be much higher than eleventh. The Sixers either need to trade Simmons or everyone other than Embiid.

Looks like they're 11th overall in net rating as a team as well, so I imagine those two stats are pretty well correlated.

Strange to look at the stats of all 5 of the Sixers starting 5, all 5 seem to have slightly regressed this year compared to last. That's not a great sign.

This is so fucking stupid Jesus Christ

And yet they have a better start to the season than last year.
