2020 Democratic Presidential Nominees

Governor Abrams won the 2019 year in politics per MSNBC:

This continues to be weird

Yeah, I saw a probable veep list in the last couple of days - can't remember which site - and she and Harris were both high on the list, like top 4. I get neither. I really want Abrams to run for the weakest GA senate seat. Then maybe we could talk a spot on the 2024 ticket. God, if we end up with a Biden/Abrams ticket, the only news would be Hunter's Ukraine board job and Abrams' taxes.

I actually think this is a good take that doesn’t reduce black voters to agency-less drones:

It didn’t really say much.

The story with Pete is pretty simple. He’s an unknown candidate facing three known candidates in a must win election. The voter base is risk adverse and not really paying much attention to the candidates. That’s probably the best explanation of black support for Biden and the one that’s worst for Pete.

As an unknown, Pete is focused primarily on Iowa and NH. He’s hoping to concentrate spending and resources there to build momentum. Opposing forces know this and they’re preemptively countering an Iowa victory by making arguments that Iowa would be an outlier. It’s a lily white red state and “Mayo Pete” is actually a Republican so if he wins, whatever.

You’re basically ignoring the article’s entire point... Lately, Pete’s surrogates have been floating/dogwhistling that non-white voters, particularly black voters are homophobic sheep. They’re certainly not alone in denigrating black voters, but I appreciated that this article problematizes that view.

The electorates of both of these states are really white, so by focusing on these states to the extent that he has been, he’s sending non-white voters a message that he doesn’t care about them or issues they affect them. Regardless of whether or not this is true, it’s a legitimate critique of Buttigieg’s strategy, but he also didn’t have the luxury of name recognition, so it’s a bit of damned if you/don’t narrative, too. I appreciate his dilemma even if I don’t necessarily sympathize with him.

Do you have some examples of Pete’s surrogates denigrating black voters?

The article said that black Democrats don’t favor gay marriage as much as white Democrats. That’s a selection effect because white people who don’t favor gay marriage select out of being Democrats and black people who don’t support gay marriage remained Democrats as the shift happened. The article points that out but doesn’t label it a selection effect. They also point out that it doesn’t seem to move the needle.

This was in response to the broader explanation which I’ve heard come from all segments of the party including Pete haters using it as a reason Pete wouldn’t be a good nominee.

I address the latter point as well. It’s another very cynical attack on his newcomer status and relative lack of resources compared to Sanders and Warren. It’s really ugly politics. Pete is playing the game that was laid out before him. To say Pete doesn’t care about black voters because he’s focusing on the first two events on the calendar is just horrible to say. He’ll probably drop out if he doesn’t do well in Iowa and NH.

Mayo Pete is the only candidate that hasn’t released a statement. Gotta talk to all his think tank buddies to make sure he’s not too critical of US imperialism.

Pete released a statement close to an hour ago.
