Danny Manning replacement search thread

I am a Wes Miller fan. His teams play great defense. If we strike out on the big names, he would be a good choice at a reasonable cost although if he does well at Wake I assume we would have to be concerned about UNC poaching our coach.

Currie is going to have to do some super deep dives in a # of under the radar/diamond in the roughs coaches as not going to get a well known coaching commodity at this point in time. The lustre and shine of Rodney Rogers, Timmy D, Chill, CP3, our all NBA team of Ish/Teague/JJ/Aminu and past successes are pretty much forgotten by most and no one is going to want to jump into this garbage heap. If not afraid of some past questionable coaching influences I think a Steve Forbes from East Tenn St could be a great hire (worked with Gillespie and Pearl) or if more on the clean sheet associations a Matt McMahon @ Murray State or Brian Wardle @ Bradley. Think we are going to have to go even riskier for a young guy who is just starting to get a few winning seasons/ncaa tourneys with understanding he has 2 years to show vast improvement or onto the next high risk/reward potential hire. We have too much to offer in money, facilities, ACC, etc. to mess around and be very upfront that we know the right coach can win and do it the right way. It only took Davey O a couple of years and many others around the nation that have done the same and able to sustain successful programs.

I was looking at conference standings the other day to see what non-P5 teams are having good seasons. One team that I noticed is Duquesne, who is 5-0 in the A10 (decent conference) and 15-2 overall. I looked up their coach (Keith Dambrot), and the guy has done a ton of winning in his career. He coached 13 seasons at Akron and never won less than 19 games in a season (305-139 overall). He is in his 3rd season at Duquesne and seems to have them on an upward trajectory. Best of all, he was the HS coach of LeBron James, and still seems to be close with him. One negative would be that he is 61 years old. Not saying that he would be my first choice, and I don't know all that much about him, but I would probably rather have a guy like that for 5 or so years than rolling the dice with another inexperienced hire.

I don't have one guy I am focused on... Perhaps I'm naive, but I'll give John Currie the benefit of the doubt on the search and eventual hire.

There are plenty of guys we could hire where I'd immediately be hugely disappointed, but Wes Miller isn't one of them.

If we hire Wes, I still think that is a huge step in the right direction. I'd like us to do a wider search to see if any "home run hire" names are interested, but I'd feel very good about some of the more realistic options (Miller, Forbes, Rhoades).

Maybe I'm just exhausted with the dysfunctional shitshow we currently have. When I watch interviews w/ Miller and Rhoades, I can feel their passion for coaching... It is infectious. That wasn't Bz and it sure isn't Manning.

I would be so pumped if UNC were after our coach. Or anyone, really. If anyone is making overtures toward our coach, I'm thrilled.

Steve Forbes - East Tennessee State (Southern Conference) (2015–present)

2015–16 East Tennessee State 24–12 14–4 2nd Vegas 16 Semifinals
2016–17 East Tennessee State 27–8 14–4 T–1st NCAA First Round
2017–18 East Tennessee State 25–9 14–4 . 2nd
2018–19 East Tennessee State 24–10 13–5 T–3rd CIT First Round

East Tennessee State: 100–39 (.719) 55–17 (.764)

Forbes can really coach and is a winner. I like him a lot but he does it with a roster full of juco transfers. Also he was attached to Bruce Pearl when the whole staff got fired for recruiting violations at Tennessee. Currie was there at the time so likely he has a very strong opinion on Forbes one way or another. If he likes him and thinks he will run a clean program and can adapt to recruiting only HS players then I expect him to be a top candidate.

I'm not deterred by Wes' lack of top 25 wins. I don't know if UNCG has ever beaten a top 25. That is a program with very little to sell and no tradition to speak of, yet he has them winning 25 games a year consistently. He is young and very passionate. I think he will do well at a high major program. I agree with Racer's concern, however, that if he came here and did not succeed it would be beyond awkward. If he did succeed, however, we could have him for 25 years.

I only wish Wes had a little P.T. Barnum in him. That's why Skip was the perfect coach for Wake.

Love this take. A really small thing I look at in the grand scheme of coaching is post game press conferences. I think they say a lot about a coach’s drive and character. You can see them 30 minutes after a win or loss and see how they act. I think Clawson does an exceptional job at talking about what his team did right and/or wrong during a game, 30 minutes after, with no film to go by. It’s pretty impressive. You can tell Danny has little passion, and little energy after a win or loss. Sometimes it seems like he’s even more happy after a loss, whereas Clawson, you can tell by his mood if they won or lost.

Anyway, I like all of the guys you mentioned. They seem to have a drive, and a passion for coaching college kids the game. I would definitely be happy if we went after Beilien, and got turned down (if he got fired of course). At least we made an effort to hire a proven winner at one of the highest levels of college basketball.

The beauty of this is that Currie could be talking to him now to avoid any future embarrassment.
