Danny Manning replacement search thread

Didn't realize that Matta is only 52. Wake would have to pony up some serious cash to get him. Would they be able to do that after the Manning debacle?

Doesn’t Matta have some fairly serious health issues? I thought that was the reason he stepped down from Ohio State and why he isn’t coaching now.

To be fair, the dead corpse of Thad Matta would be an improvement over the current coach.

Matta stepped down because of health issues. He isn't coaching now because payments from tOSU would stop. His health would need to be assessed, as well as his willingness to return to the stress of coaching. His payments from tOSU end in May 2020. He may be more interested in coaching (and regular paychecks) starting about then.

Hopefully he would consider March

Hard to justify firing Manning right now - after all, he has us playing at UNC's level this season.

Shaka's Texas team got Pittsnoggled and Ganseyed at WVU. Lost by 38, and the game wasn't that close.

$10 million and he'll be available for hire. The current Texas AD is not the one who hired him. Nor is he the one who gave Shaka an extension and guaranteed money.

Maybe he would work cheap in a career rehab job, considering he would have a nice nest egg.

Well one HUGE thing we have going for us is there is clearly NO STRESS @ WF right now as we just need a warm body that can actually coach and give the alum a modicum of hope. He comes in a hero from day one and you don't have to worry one iota about being held accountable by the administration or any big donors on actual results on the court. Just ask Danny and [ ]. Just keep a clean culture!

I'm kind of dumbfounded by the Shaka thing and the idea that we should be excited to have a chance at him. So we're pumped he got drubbed so he'll get canned and we can hire him? The guy that just got drubbed? I don't get it.

I'd rather pursue Matta, a proven coach in the Power 6. Or a younger guy looking for his first shot in the P6.

Yeah, I was a huge Shaka fan back before Texas, and I would have taken him last year too after Matta or Oats, but the longer he's at Texas, the more the bloom is off that rose.

Please no Shaka. Yes he had a team make a fabulous run to the Final Four, but his last four NCAA tournament trips were first-round losses, three of those to lower-seeded teams.

I lived in Richmond for a time while he was at VCU and went to several games, and was completely unimpressed with his in-game coaching. A lot of CAA and A-10 teams were overwhelmed by his pressure defense, but if the opponent could handle the ball he did not have a plan B. I think he's been completely exposed at Texas despite recruiting a lot of talent.

But I'll take him over Danny!

I agree with these posts on Shaka, but I'd take him well before a coach with a profile like Bz or Manning had before coming here.

I'd guess Matta is at the top of the list. I wouldn't be surprised if his people have already been contacted.

Shaka is likely on the short list. The rest is a real crap shoot with Pat Kelsey and HOF Wes in consideration.
