Danny Manning replacement search thread

I don’t think Forbes will be our basketball coach. He worked with Pearl, his team is made up of JUCO’s currently. He’s a solid coach, with a very good record at where he’s been, but there’s going to be so many guys out there who are proven winners that do it the “Wake Way”. They don’t have any past affiliations with allegations. They don’t have player issues. Beilein, Richey, Miller, Medved, Craig Smith all fit that bill. Pretty much my top targets.

Matta would be great, but I don’t know where his name came from. Nobody in the media talks about him having any future coaching basketball again, so I don’t know where we got his name from as a possible candidate. Again, he would be great, but seems unrealistic.

How is the "Wake Way" working out the last 8-9 years? Forbes may not do it your "Wake Way" because he is doing it the "Winning Way".

You guys aren't seeing the bigger picture. What about the 6-weak gap in coverage when he gets fired by the cavaliers on Friday, but we can't actually hire him until April. If Currie calls him this week, it will be the first thing to come up. It's a lost cause, Beilein won't want to risk a lapse in coverage or pay the COBRA, he is going to take another job, which is too bad because otherwise I'm sure he'd be ours for the taking. We should probably just focus our vibes on convincing Rick Barnes to leave Tennessee to come to Wake.

Hard for me to tell if this is serious, but if it is, the entire point of COBRA is there is no lapse in coverage (whether you are fired or quit). The second point is that you are just responsible to pay the full amount your previous company was paying. In an extreme lets say the Cavs policy is $2k per person and they employee portion is $400, all that means is, any employee that leaves, can pay $2k/mth to maintain current insurance benefits (plus a 2% admin fee).

So if he's out of work for 6 weeks, he's on the hook for $3-4k.

Maybe we should be more worried that, for COBRA, that's after tax cost so he loses the before tax benefit when it's deducted from his pay check.

I think that like in years past we end up w/ someone that has not been identified by the fanbase yet.

I certainly hope not, considering this was the problem with Manning. Hiring someone we haven't identified yet likely means hiring someone because they go on an impressive late season/tournament run with their team, which is exactly what Manning did at Tulsa. Anyone that has a good enough track record to be likely to be successful here has almost certainly already been identified as a coaching candidate. Anyone that doesn't have that track record yet doesn't realistically have enough time left to prove it before we will be hiring.

The obvious lesson we should have learned from hiring Manning would be that a late season ~10 game push does not alone mean the coach warrants real consideration.

The most important thing that Currie can offer Beilein or another candidate is French benefits that will make the Wake job more attractive.

These are the kinds of complexities that make me think it's all a lost cause. Who is going to pay those taxes even if we work the ~$4000 COBRA money as back pay in the contract? It will dfinitely come up in the contract negotiations. Maybe RJ is right it won't be the first thing discussed, but it will definitely be top 5. I think it will scuttle the whole deal and that's the main reason we won't land Bielein. Like I said, lets save our vibes for someone more realistic like Barnes or Pearl. The timing for those two guys matches up much better.

Bird, it won't be Top 5. It's really easy. Whether the next coach is 36 or 66, he'll get the same coverage as Hatch gets or something better if it exists.

To give you an idea, here's a likely top his list:

Salary
Term
Buyout for each side
Budget for assistants
Facilities budget
Recruiting philosophy

I'm probably missing a couple of things.

Yeah, you are missing health insurance coverage for the intervening 6 weeks and start date. Every time I've switched jobs/employers, the biggest hang up was health coverage and ensuring there was no lapse in coverage. The issue is pre-existing conditions and making sure there are no health issues during the lapse period. I really think Bielein is a lost cause for this specific reason.

lol

I wonder what kind of radio presents we could offer Beilein

You aren't on the same level as Beilein. As I said, he'll get what Hatch has or Hatch Plus. There won't be much, if anything, to negotiate here. As to the potential lapse, whatever it costs to do will be done.

Maybe he'll want to bring a personal doctor. That will be one of the rare things they may discuss.

At this level, this really isn't an issue regardless of the coach's age.

It may all come down to HMO vs PPO. Maybe even HDHP with a HSA. Should probably get the tax lawyers in the negotiations to work it all out.

Gotta up the TIAA 403(b) returns too. A diversified portfolio to limit the short-term risk, but still good enough to get over 8% returns. Full employer match up to 12%.

How do you know I'm not at the same level? I am really good a birds. No final 4s, but then again there is no comparable tournament for birding.

Could be a deal-breaker.
