Manning Buyout Negotiations Have Begun

I get that Coronavirus has changed things, but people need to stop making the excuse that Currie all of a sudden couldn't raise the buyout money in February or March of this year once the season was over because we all of a sudden had a pandemic to deal with. Currie should have raised money and had a plan in place during the months leading up to that. If we hadn't hired a new coach to replace Manning yet, say in March/beginning of April, I would totally get it. However, the fact that we haven't dealt with Manning, despite the large buyout, is complete bullshit and a failure on Currie's part. That's why John is here. That's his top job at the moment. Things were really, really good in 2019 for the balance sheets of many big money donors. If Currie was capable and competent, he would have already raised the cash long before any of the events unfolded in 2020 so far...

This my fellow deacon fans is the correct answer.

With a big ol' smile on his face.
That asshole probably makes about double as much as all those other coaches combined besides Clawson. All while holding a 30-80 ACC record, while some there have championships/runner-ups/Final 4-type stuff.

Fuck you, Ron.

The problem with this 'correct answer' is that none of us know what has been going on behind the scenes. Currie could have had no intention of firing Manning. Or, Currie could have had commitments from big donors sufficient to cover the buyout and been starting to squeeze the trigger on the firing when all hell broke loose and the big donors all called and pulled their commitments. Who knows? Speculation is fun and all but we just need to remember that speculation is what it is.

I doubt, however, that any big donors would actually hand Currie the cash for the buyout in early 2020 and say "here is several million large, whenever you are ready to pull the trigger, go ahead and use it". They wouldn't hand it over until they had to.

The beginning of the "normal" basketball coach firing and hiring season begins the day after selection Sunday. We didn't have selection Sunday this year, so no P6 coaches have been fired. Midseason firings, other than for cause besides the record, are rare. Like one per two decades rare.

Everything was cancelled in the college sports world. EVERYTHING.

Exactly. It never works that way. Anyone calling out Currie for essentially not getting cash up front from WF big donors just in case the economy implodes just as the hoop season ending is not dealing reality.

The whole problem is this problem had to have been taken care of last year. Fixing it this year would have been way too late as the program is atrophying.

Assuming Currie would have been allowed to, he should have fired Manning day one and hired Wes Miller. That may have not have been everyone's choice but Wes would have accepted in that awkward time frame.

I don't buy the lack of money excuse. Keeping Manning has cost more than his salary and Wes could have been hired with a low base salary with incentives based on production.

Wake pissed around while the fan base was dying and now the whole sport may be dying.

THIS is the correct answer, folks.

Pledging money =/= having money

My last bit of optimism is this whole situation (albeit very small sliver of hope at this point) is that Currie is ready to make the move, has the money that he needs to make it happen, has his replacement on speed dial and basically “committed” unofficially, but Currie is waiting for official word from the NCAA on if or when the upcoming basketball season will happen. If there is no season (I sure hope this isn’t the case), then why pay DM his millions to walk if there is no rush. Everything is so up in the air right now, nobody knows how long all of this will last. I still believe a change is coming, but everything has been delayed, and possibly even canceled for the upcoming season which could save a few million from the buyout if Currie waits at this point.

Call me crazy, that’s fine. But maybe it’s just the weeks of quarantine and working from home that has played tricks on my mind. I’m hoping my vision pans out but we shall wait and see. Go Deacs!

I do agree that all of this is speculation, but wow...I totally disagree with the theory about donors not coming through despite what happened in March/April and that Currie therefore was basically ‘stranded’ and out of options. That’s not how it works. That whole process would have been completed in the months before Coronavirus unfolded (not saying cash would have changed hands at that point). Also, if the speculation is that Currie may not have wanted to fire Manning...isn’t that a failure on Currie’s part in and of itself? How could he possibly justify that stance? This too is speculation and I think it’s more clear than not that he wants Manning gone and I’ve generally been a hopeful fan of Currie.

Again, if a replacement hadn’t been named after everything happened at the end of February/beginning of March, I would totally get it, but very wealthy people do not blow with the wind so Manning not getting fired for this reason doesn’t jive with the theories above. If wealthy donors committed money, it’s essentially earmarked in a much larger ongoing plan; Coronavirus or not. Without going into too many specifics, the firm I work for manages board designated and donor restricted foundations and special purpose fund portfolios for large organizations (mostly non-profits). The targets and budgeting for 2020 based on donations have not been impacted as of today. Granted these are many more multiples of smaller overall donations (the average is still a little over $20K/donation) so I’m not sure how Sutton/Shah stroking two $7.5MM checks would be impacted, but again Currie’s job was/is to raise enough cash from many donors in order to fire Manning and start fixing our B-ball program. Speculation or not, to this point he hasn’t done that. That’s not good.

Maybe I’m just tired of all of the excuses and my benefit of the doubt is essentially zero after the last ten years of this shit. Just burn it all down.

I’m actually hopeful with Currie, but he has failed thus far. I think he will get it right, but it’s a disappointment so far.

Part of the problem could be that the people who would give the money to buy out Mr. Manning could be driven to be as disinterested to a degree as much of the fan base.

If any of my theories are correct, Currie already has the money and probably had it in February. I suspect he also already has or had a successor locked up or close to it. Again, this is only if my theories are correct. I don't envision an interim or promoted assistant, but I could be wrong. Regardless of your personal or political view of Covid-19, if any of my theories are correct or close to it, I promise you it is impossible for Currie to have made an announcement of financial significance (firing or hiring) once Covid-19 hit in early March and as many of you have suggested, it may continue to be impossible for another year. My post was just speculation and personal belief that something already happened or is happening and both parties are being silenced by the optics of Covid-19 and/or legal representation.

We can't get rid of Danny now, we could lose all these 2nd rate transfers we are getting!
