I get that Coronavirus has changed things, but people need to stop making the excuse that Currie all of a sudden couldn't raise the buyout money in February or March of this year once the season was over because we all of a sudden had a pandemic to deal with. Currie should have raised money and had a plan in place during the months leading up to that. If we hadn't hired a new coach to replace Manning yet, say in March/beginning of April, I would totally get it. However, the fact that we haven't dealt with Manning, despite the large buyout, is complete bullshit and a failure on Currie's part. That's why John is here. That's his top job at the moment. Things were really, really good in 2019 for the balance sheets of many big money donors. If Currie was capable and competent, he would have already raised the cash long before any of the events unfolded in 2020 so far...
That asshole probably makes about double as much as all those other coaches combined besides Clawson. All while holding a 30-80 ACC record, while some there have championships/runner-ups/Final 4-type stuff. With a big ol' smile on his face.
This my fellow deacon fans is the correct answer.
The problem with this 'correct answer' is that none of us know what has been going on behind the scenes. Currie could have had no intention of firing Manning. Or, Currie could have had commitments from big donors sufficient to cover the buyout and been starting to squeeze the trigger on the firing when all hell broke loose and the big donors all called and pulled their commitments. Who knows? Speculation is fun and all but we just need to remember that speculation is what it is.
I doubt, however, that any big donors would actually hand Currie the cash for the buyout in early 2020 and say "here is several million large, whenever you are ready to pull the trigger, go ahead and use it". They wouldn't hand it over until they had to.
