Wake Men's Soccer Spring 2011

here's an update from a friend....

The goal in the second half came off a corner kick. The Deacs looked very sharp and aggressive tonight. Should have been 3-0 at the half as one shot just missed at the top of the goal and another was trickling around in front of the goal. Passes were very sharp and crisp tonight. We looked very good on offense and very solid defensively. Probably 300-400 folks in attendance. We maybe outshot them 12-6 or something like that. We are much improved over last year.

Here's the official game report:

Deacons Shut Out Blue Devils 2-0

Andy Lubahn and Anthony Arena scored goals for Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Andy Lubahn and Anthony Arena found the back of the net for Wake Forest as the Demon Deacons put together their most complete effort of the spring, shutting out Duke 2-0 at Spry Stadium Friday.

The Deacs controlled play from the outset, having a number of chances before Lubahn tallied in the 38th minute. The sophomore striker has now score in three consecutive spring games. Arena scored an insurance goal on a header off a corner kick in the 82nd minute to leave the final score 2-0.

Michael Lisch played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Demon Deacons to earn the shutout.

Lubahn had a good chance to open the scoring in the 29th minute when he came free in the penalty area but his two shots from in close were saved by the Blue Devil keeper.

In the 36th minute, Luca Gimenez took off on a breakaway down the left side and cracked a shot that hit the inside of the right post and came back out, leaving the game scoreless.

Lubahn struck in the 38th minute, collecting a through ball and slotting it past the goalkeeper to give the Demon Deacons a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Duke’s best chance came in the 68th minute when Lisch made a point-blank save on a powerful header to preserve the clean sheet.

Wake’s second goal came in the 82nd minute as Teddy Mullin served a corner kick right to Arena, who crisply headed it into the goal.

The Demon Deacons will return to action on April 9 with their only road trip of the spring as they travel to take on West Virginia.

Any word on who were putting things together? I really wish I could have been there. Should be there next week.

No Van Winkle brands are available in NC. This state has some odd liquor policies. I'm working on some Bulleit and club soda. Might move up to some Blanton's.

No van winkle...that's unamerican...sounds like there's a bluedevil or tarhole in politics in NC plotting against my good friend "Pappy"

Did you get any word on which set of players were putting things together on the field? Last week we looked like we'd be better than last season but it seemed that we didn't get our best lineup out at any one point.

No details on line ups or personel...just heard we absolutely dominated the fools...besides the 2 goals we hit the post an additional 3 times...

Dayum! I'm all for crushing Duke!

yeah...sounds like the lads made them official members of "Vidovich's Bitches"...Ha!!

I'm just glad the boys are starting to come together!!

This doesn't mean much, but I was watching a fair amount in the first half (what I could see), and Duke got into our box twice...like the goalie only touched it twice the whole half. We must have dominated them.

Here's a fabulous updated from another friend...I will withhold his name but what a great recap for all of us that couldn't attend the game!! Enjoy...thebaron

"The Deacs looked much improved over last year. We really dominated the first half and they probably should have had 2 or 3 goals. Lubahn put two point blank shots into the keeper's chest. Then Luca sent a beautiful ball from the left side around a defender and the keeper, that hit the post and spun all the way down the goal line, but never crossed and gave a defender a chance to clear it off the line. There were several other balls that went across the mouth of the goal, but no one could poke in. The Deacs dominated possession and there were only two times where they even put our defense under pressure.

The second half Duke played better and started pressing more. They put us under more pressure and created some opportunities. Lisch made a great save at point blank range to preserve the clean sheet. The Deacs seemed to settle down and then when they scored the second goal it really took the wind out of duke.

Best I can remember the starting line up was
Lisch
Duvall - Ibikunle - Wenzel - Arena
Delbono - Watts
Mullins - Emerson - Luca
Lubahn

I'm not 100% sure about Mullins/Emerson as Emerson seemed to move around quite a bit.

A couple of thoughts on the players

Lisch - Was not tested a whole lot, but when he was he stood strong. He did not really distribute the ball much, but he has a boot on him. He punted one ball that bounced about 25 yards out. He did not seem to be as vocal as Akira, but you did hear him talking to his defense.

Duvall - He is blazing fast and created several opportunities coming out of the back. In the first half duke completely lost track of him and he burned them. His defense is lacking, but uses his incredible speed to make up for mistakes.

Ibikunle - Very solid centrally with Wenzel, not spectacular but no big mistake either.

Wenzel - Stud. He is so composed. Reminded me of Julian Valentin in that even under pressure he seems completely in control and never seems frustrated. Very tough in the air and fought hard for every ball. Was very vocal in directing the team.

Arena - I was not sure about him playing out wide but he did a good job. In the first half he was connecting well with Watts and Luca to get things going. He is an excellent defender. If the back line can cover for Duvall, they will be very strong.

Delbono - Very solid, much better than I remember him from last year. Struggled a lit bit in the second half (his touch let him down on several occasions), but over all very good game.

Watts - He may decapitate someone this year. He is an absolute beast around the ball. The ball is his and if you have it he will do whatever is necessary to get it back, including severing a limb from your body. Drew a yellow card in the first half for his aggressive play. But people will think twice when he is in their area. When he went out in the second half is when duke had their surge.

Mullins - He took all the kicks on a set piece. He should have had an assist in the first half off a corner (hit the crossbar) and his ball on the second goal was top notch. In the first half he didn't do much in the field, but he was better in the second, connecting with Lubahn. If he, Luca and Lubahn get on the same page, lookout.

Emerson - Again, better than I remember from last year, very solid and seemed to be everywhere.

Gimenez - Very hard worker, never gave up on a ball. His fitness looked much better this year. His almost goal was a thing of beauty, totally robbed by the soccer gods.

Lubahn - Stud. Never ever quits on a ball and seems like he is always running. He is so strong that he is constantly being pushed and pulled, but he is able to hold them off. There were 2 or 3 times where he was called for the foul for hooking the defender when the defender was completely draped on him. He should have had an additional goal and he put two directly into the keeper's chest.

Norman - Didn't play much but I like his energy off the bench. He had several nice plays and has a non-stop motor.

Newnam - Did not look in rhythm. Played about 20 minutes and really struggled.

Tomaselli/Randolph/Torres - Got about 15 minutes combined. Torres apparently found Mugsy's shorts from the 80's lying around somewhere and decided to wear them. His thighs are HUGE.

This team reminds me of the 2005 - 2006 teams. They are young but talented. The can play in stretches where you would think they are one of the best teams in the country and then there are stretches when they can't string three passes together. There is a lot of improvement from last year and I would expect them to get better over the summer.

Sorry for being so long-winded."

Parkhurst injury...bummer

American Exports: Hamstring sidelines Parkhurst
US center back likely to be out for Nordsjælland until early May

Greg Seltzer MLSsoccer.com April 4, 2011
(Courtesy of FC Copenhagen.) AMSTERDAM – FC Nordsjælland defender Michael Parkhurst (above, right) is expected to be out of action until May after suffering a hamstring sprain midway through Sunday's draw at AC Horsens.

The US international hobbled off on the stroke of halftime after making an unfortunately awkward challenge.

"He pulled his hamstring on the right hand side," Wild Tigers press officer Christian Wolny told MLSsoccer.com by phone. "He will need a four-week match break."

Parkhurst will hope to be ready in time for a key relegation derby at Lyngby on May 4.

"He will start training [on the side] later this week," said Wolny. "He will be in the gym doing fitness work with the physios for about a week and then can return to training [with the team] outside."

It is the first time in his professional career that Parkhurst has suffered a hamstring setback, and the unlucky way it occurred only adds to the frustration.

"He was surprised by it and he's not very happy about it," added Wolny. "He just misplaced his leg in the tackle a little bit. It wasn't a bad tackle or a tough contact. It didn't look that bad at first."

Parkhurst has started 17 of FCN's 23 league matches this season. Currently winless in four, the club stands three points above the relegation zone with 10 games to play.

We were unbelievable on set pieces (offensively and defensively -- unsung aspect of those teams) for those great years, even though we didn't really have a great dead ball specialist taker.

Not sure if you are specifically referencing the national championship season, but Curfman was a damn fine dead ball specialist (and one of the top Americans at the task, as well).
