Wake Men's Soccer Spring 2011

#13 was Newnam?!!? Wow.

Yeah, he played but was hardly worth mentioning.

Can anyone remember a good outside back we've had in a while? Certainly don't think Evan Brown or Lyle Adams really count. Ike played out there some at one time, but he's the only one I can think of.

The dude that had that crazy Sounders fan sing a song about him. Evan Brown, maybe? He was good.

Woops. Yea, I was talking about Evan Brown when I wrote Evan Turner. You liked his game? I thought he was serviceable, but not stellar. He never caught on in the league either.

James Riley is, unfortunately, before my time. I asked about Evan Brown, but I just don't rate him highly. Same with Lyle.

At literally every position on the field we've had stellar performers. I just can't think of a stellar outside back. James Riley's a good answer. I forgot about him.

Also, I really want to watch Newnam play. Haven't seen him since I moved away from Winston last year.

Brown and Adams were great -- also underrated, understandably because of the rest of the talent on that team. I don't know that I've ever seen two players make such improvements from their freshman to senior years. Both would run all day, stretch the field, score and set up important goals, get stuck in, and Adams particularly was great in the air. They were always fit and extremely reliable. We were unbelievable on set pieces (offensively and defensively -- unsung aspect of those teams) for those great years, even though we didn't really have a great dead ball specialist taker. Adams had trouble maintaining possession sometimes and gave the ball away in some dangerous situations, but those times were just magnified because of how amazing we were usually in that area.

What part of their game didn't you/don't you rate?

I realize now that dv7 was not referring to Riley and the Sounders fans penning a song for him (I think it was noted how odd it was that the fans' first song was about Riley and not a more established name on the squad), so my bad on that. I remember now the sketchy stalkerish Evan Brown youtube song.

Not recognizing Ben Newnam when he was at the game with the intent of recapping it, though, is crazy.

If you weren't there for Riley, you weren't there -- nothing wrong with that.

Four best outside backs in Wake history, in my opinion: Chad Evans, James Riley (though he played all over the place), Lyle Adams, Evan Brown. The fact that none of the last three ever made an All ACC team is insane.

Yeah, it was pathetic on my part to not recognize Newnam. No argument.

I liked Adams a lot as well. He was also a very funny dude. Did a perfect TNSSO impersonation.

Completely agree. Great recap.

Those guys were awesome off the field too. At least in my experiences with them.

Post game reports are appreicated;)
