Wake Men's Soccer Spring 2011

Not sure if you are specifically referencing the national championship season, but Curfman was a damn fine dead ball specialist (and one of the top Americans at the task, as well).

curf buried a ton of free kicks at the end of his career. daluz was deadly from the left corner. cronin/bone found ike/tracy's heads many, many times in 2008.

I was more referring to the post-Curf national champions and the following Final Four team (Adams and Brown's junior and senior years when we were, like, the best team to ever play college soccer). It was mainly in the context of Adams and Brown as attackers and defenders, and those two both kind of came into their own the last two years (though Adams scored four goals his sophomore year).

No one on either of those two teams was a regular threat to score from dead balls, at least to the extend previous Wake players had been. As Latt mentioned, we had guys who could put it on the heads of our players. Valentin, Opara, Adams, and Tracy were all deadly in the air, but despite not having a Curfman (or similar threat) we were amazing from those situations offensively as well as being beasts defending those situations.

Definitely not forgetting about Curfman.

Not sure if everybody knows this, but Kofi Agyapong is transferring after this year....likely to Columbia/Harvard, somewhere like that.

Word from West Virginia is the Deacs played well and tied 0-0. WVU returned all their players from last years team that lost to last years Natl. champions Akron 3-2 in the 2nd round of the NCAA playoffs.

The Deacs had good opportunities and so did WVU...it was a good game and
WVU was much better than the Duke team that the Deacs played last weekend.

Cheers,

official game report:

Demon Deacons Draw 0-0 at West Virginia

Wake Forest earned its second consecutive shutout

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Wake Forest men’s soccer team posted its second straight shutout, drawing 0-0 with West Virginia in its only road match of the spring.

Michael Lisch earned the clean sheet in goal, making four saves to keep the Mountaineers off the board.

The Demon Deacons controlled possession, and had a number of opportunities that they were unable to convert.

“Overall, I thought it was a good effort from our team,” said head coach Jay Vidovich. “We had the better of the possession and created some quality chances against a well-coached West Virginia team, we just couldn’t finish them today.”

Luca Gimenez had a golden opportunity to steal a win for the Deacs in the 90th minute, but he could not steer a sitter into the back of the net.

Earlier in the match, the Mountaineer defense cleared two shots off of corner kicks off of the goal line to keep the match scoreless.

West Virginia was able to mount a few dangerous attacks, but the Demon Deacon defense successfully absorbed the pressure.

“It was a very competitive match that had almost the intensity level of a fall game,” said Vidovich. “Games like this will help prepare us for where we want to be heading into next season.”

“There were a couple of occasions when they were able to put guys through our back line,” Vidovich continued. “While I’m happy that we were able to earn our second straight shutout against a tournament-tested team, they revealed some things that we have to work on heading into next weekend’s matches against Mars Hill and North Carolina.”

The Demon Deacons will host a doubleheader next Saturday at Spry Stadium. Wake will face Mars Hill at 4 p.m. and North Carolina at 7 p.m.

Thanks for the report as always, baron.

Sounds like the Deacs will at least be fun to watch this year. I'm happy as long as they get back to the tournament.

sounds like they are playing a better brand of JV soccer...it's hard to be satisfied until we are consistently back to final four material...i'm sorry but we've been spoiled:cool: But still better than last year...which was a nightmare:tard:

Watching United v citeh at noon then El Clasico at 4. Getting up to Spry after that.

No idea how good my analysis will be since I do not plan on staying sober during a United-citeh FA Cup Semi Final! And after that might as well keep on rolling watching Madrid v Barca, which I expect to be a cracker.

Looking forward to hazing some UNC players. Just gotta remember to get a roster so that I can call them out by name.
