Have been called three times across Hershey, Philly, and DC but each time dismissed

Was tired and had a little bit of a sore throat yesterday. Feel great today. Doubtful it was Covid.

Received a letter at work today claiming that palmab03 filed for unemployment 3 weeks ago. Now my wife has a claim, so maybe they're confused. Or someone has identify theft fucked my life up a bit. Dangerous part is that the unemployment offices are overwhelmed they're just sending everyone money, and then going to take back later whatever they over-sent out.

Twice. Both times just checked the box that I'm a student and I got a letter in a week or two saying I'm exempt.

Got called for jury duty at the end of this month. Could easily get out of it with a doctor's note (sitting for long periods of time sucks with 2 herniated discs) I think, but am feeling lame about skipping out on my "civic duty". WWTPD?

I've never been called for jury duty. Think it would be a fun experience once, so I would go unless the back really is a big issue.

You'd have fun in a 4-day trial where you wind up sending some black kid to jail for drugs ? That's what a lot of the actual cases are that go to trial. Not really my cup of tea.

Not to mention, at least 5 or 6 of the other jurors are guaranteed to be total mouthbreathers who couldn't figure out how to get out of jury duty.

Been called in NoVa twice. Told not to show up the second time but the first sucked. One of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Father accused of crimes against his daughter. She testified. It was a brutal 2 1/2 days followed by deliberation and sentencing recommendations. We all completely believed he was guilty. Evidence and her testimony was powerful. Even with that it was still emotionally difficult to convict and reccomend the maximum sentence allowed (he would be something like 80 or 90 I don't recall exactly) before he would even be eligible for release. Before that experience i would never have imagined how difficult it would be to, metaphorically, pull the trigger. Would make the same call tomorrow but I was emotionally drained for a few days afterwards. Guess all that is mostly to say it's a big responsibility that should be take seriously.

I don’t think you should shirk your duty. If you do end up empaneled, get ready for the People of Walmart (Like Biff insinuated) becoming your collaborators for at least a couple days.

Some of us do it every day, and it can be super fucking tough. One of the hardest things is seeing a total piece of shit get a few months, while a good dude who just made a quick mistake or a few big mistakes over a short period of time get fucking hammered.

what are some ideas you have for making the justice system better, GTB?

Bail reform needs to happen yesterday. The law is "you should get out, unless the Government can prove you shouldn't." If the Government can prove you shouldn't, then the burden shifts to you to prove you won't violate.

That's a good system, but the problem with it is that the Governments burden to prove you shouldn't get out is fucking abysmally low. The Government saying something like, "well, he was found with a gun, so he's obviously dangerous" is enough. Even if there's no evidence the gun was fired, or how long the person had it prior to being arrested. Then it's up to your dipshit state lawyer to do something, and that's a mixed bag.

The collateral impact of a person being kept in jail is that their life just gets totally fucking upended. Moreover, now the Government has a ton of pressure to get pleas - because the person is sitting in custody. In state court, the person can sit in custody like that for a longer period of time than they would get even if they just pled guilty. I see state court documents in nearly every federal case that indicate that a state-court defendant "took a plea" for nothing more than to just be let out of jail.

So now, the guy is out of jail, but his record is now worse. Moreover, he's dealing with having been in jail for so long. Queue vicious cycle.

It's part of this "systematic racism" that everyone keeps talking about (but doing little about).

And I know it sounds stupid and racist, but I think all judges (state and federal) should be required to make additional finding if the person they are sentencing is black. Just straight up affirmative action in sentencing - if the person is black, they should get a lighter sentence unless the judge makes specific findings that a normal/higher sentence is warranted in the case.

Perversely, if applied like I envision, this would result in nothing more than correcting the fact that black defendants are unfairly sentenced to longer sentences already.

I was actually initially impressed with the make up of my jury -- it was diverse, seemingly, along racial, socio-economic, and educational lines, but it all went to shit in deliberation with everyone biased against the admittedly terrible lawyer on one of the sides, and swayed by the slick outside-litigator the other side brought in, who basically didn't know that much about the case, just got up and did a performance. I was kind of tired of it all by the end of it and didn't have the energy to put up much of a fight, but we also weren't dealing with putting anyone behind bars or life/death stuff.

I was called, but for a case in an area of law that I study, so I was pretty quickly dismissed.

I explained to them that I was planning my next heist and that I knew a guy who could come visit them.
