2020 Presidential Election: Biden v. Trump

I don't think Pete runs against VP Kamala in four years

I think it'll be more like the post-Obama primary with a much smaller group of candidates

While not a 100% necessity, Buttigieg would be helped if he held an elective office other than a short term as mayor of South Bend, Indiana. Republican Todd Young is up for re-election in 2022 (he beat Evan Bayh by 10 points in 2016). If Biden wins, 2022 may be a tough year for Dems and Indiana is a conservative state; so, it may not be the best spot for Pete, but hard to jump from mayor of mid-size town to President.

Democrats need to redefine "fiscal responsibility" away from deficits to making sure people get good value for their tax dollars.

I would gladly pay a higher percentage of income taxes if I saw anything in return.

It seems to me that a company like Amazon or UPS should be paying some sort of infrastructure tax based on their outsized use of the nation’s infrastructure.

If you vote a straight Dem ticket (presumably because Orange Man Baddddd) you are not right of center.

That means you support center left to progressive policies regardless of the party affiliation listed on your voter registration.

Well some of the other candidates on the ballot are Kelly Loeffler and Doug Collins so ...

GA GOP candidates are the fringe. I abhor their platform more than I support the Dem platform.

I’m for that. Fund the IRS and empower them to get the tax cheats. Create a super simple tax code. And I would be fine getting rid of corporate taxes if people weren’t allowed to treat corporations like piggy banks.

The IRS recently announced it’s going to be targeting high income earners.

Agreed. But you probably wouldn’t need to pay a higher percentage to see more in return.

I forget the statistic but something like 90+ percent of federal agencies admit they waste money. Why can’t we also cut spending (across the board).

Every year when a federal agency reaches the end of its fiscal year they have to find a way to spend any leftover money or they get less in the next budget. That makes no sense.

There are conference rooms that never get used with $1200 Herman Miller chairs. When I worked for a moving company we stored old hotel furnishings for a government agency that included unopened flat screen TVs. They were supposed to be picked up for auction but never were and the government just kept paying the rent.

Joe Biden's proposed tax rates are lower than St. Reagan's.

What rates, specifically?

Reagan lowered the top tax rate on individuals from 70% when he took office down to 28% by 1988. Biden's proposal calls for an increase to the top tax rate from 37% to 40%.

In addition, the corporate tax rate was lowered from 48% to 34% under Reagan. While the Biden proposed corporate rate is 28% this still represents a 33% increase from the current corporate rate of 21%.

Agreed that he needs to move up in political offices to make a stronger presidential bid. There's a lot of variables for 2022. As you said, off-year elections after a Democrat is elected POTUS haven't gone well for the Democratic Party since Clinton's first election in 92. But if the economy picks up and the pandemic ends that may change things. Another option would be for Pete to take a cabinet post in Biden's cabinet. That would also give him a good deal of national exposure and visibility.

I think cabinet position is more likely. No Dem can win statewide in IN right now.

If the Democrats rest on their Laurels and don't show up in the polls in 2022 they get everything they deserve

I’d also say if material conditions in 2022 are identical to 2020 I wouldn’t blame voters. But I realize that’s a radical anti-Dem position.

Part of the reason government agencies waste money is the way Congress does budgeting. They pass CR after CR for 6 weeks at a time and then will pass the annual budget some time in March or May and the agencies scramble to spend their allocation before October 1 or figure out how to cover their over draws because they over estimated what they’d get that year. Congressional budgeting is a shit show and lots agencies are in earnest trying to keep up but it is no way the run a program when you don’t know what your budget is going to be for >50% of the budgeting period. If they take the senate, Dems should pass a law that if no budget is approved by the end of the first quarter the previous year’s budget is carried over as a default.

Ah yes. The Julian Castro method. Nope.

I think he'll get more credit for trying than sticking around in Biden's cabinet then running again or settling in to be Harris' VP.

Yep.

Paygo must go.

Yep.

Maybe he can win in IN in 2022, but if he doesn't I don't see him doing much better in the 2024 Dem primaries than he did this year.
