Do states/school systems dictate what books students read in English class, or is it somewhat or completely up to the teacher?

Seems like it's up to the teacher until some kooky lady finds out about it and starts burning books.

We also read Huck Finn, which probably isn't allowed anymore.

We're supposed to teach a Shakespeare play every year, but other than that, it's pretty much open season. I mostly teach what I like. We line our lit up geographically though.

Freshmen-Pretty Wide Open
Soph-World Lit
Junior-American
Senior-British

Still pretty skewed for white dudes of European decent for most of the classes though, honestly.

People tend to like Brave New World, no? 1984 and Animal Farm too?

I've never actually read 1984. I've meant to, but just haven't.

That's more lenient than I would have thought. I assumed that a lot of it was prescribed by a panel of old white dudes.

Holden Caulifield is the intelligent grade school classmate of yours who acted above it all and never really applied himself, yet still got into an elite private school because of his parents and his test scores. He then got into serious drugs in college and either OD's in his 20's or ended up as the youngest VP at his dad's firm/company.

This is not the kind of character we should celebrate.

i assume there are banned books in your district, mako?

1984 is a slog in the middle of it when it's like a hundred pages of a fake book sandwiched in between. And I've never understood how Brave New World was a dystopia. Seems like they had that shit figured out and everybody seemed happy regardless of class. I'd definitely take that option in 2020.

I also now have 4 basketball players in quarantine and 7 students, including 3 that I eat an unmasked lunch with every other day. So good times there.

I don't think you can necessarily ban books at the local level. The state BOE may have some guidelines but if its age appropriate and the language isn't too vulgar, teachers are generally allowed to teach whatever they want, as long as they can justify it in the curriculum.

How do you think I am slowly indoctrinating my kids into becoming Antifa members?

Lord of the Flies is one that is frequently assigned that I never had assigned to me nor never read as an adult

English teacher question. What was your favorite book that you were assigned in high school? Least favorite?

Favorites were To Kill a Mockingbird, All Quiet on the Western Front, and the Great Gatsby

Least Favorite: Pride and Prejudice. I just could not get into that book. Could have been that we were reading it at the end of the semester after the AP exam and I just didn't care.

Just dropping in to say that candy corn is still trash. I am not sure why I still eat a few pieces every year knowing that I absolutely hate it.

Gimme all the mini kit kats, reese's, and snickers.

i'm just curious what would happen if you tried to teach Lolita or Satanic Verses or something

wakephan09 is gonna be mad about all this conrad slander

Hey Brasky, what you teaching your students bout Columbus today?

Those of you who don't like Things Fall Apart need to get off your white hegemonic patriarchical X'ian and imperialistic high horses.

Catcher in the Rye is the second worst HS book and it's a close run for first. People who like the writing or empathize with the main character in Catcher in the Rye have almost universally never worked a real day in their lives. The book should be renamed, "rich white people problems and why rich white people suck and Knight will fucking fight them just to give them a taste of having their ass kicked for once in their lives." Fucking terrible book.

These are the two America's right now.

I just can't figure out why this spread so much around the White House...

Jack shit, my teaching calendar will not be dictated by artificial holidays

I already taught my AH1 kids about Columbus and his crimes back in early Sept. We went over the Bill of Rights and reviewed for tomorrow’s Revolution/Constitution unit test.
