Chat Thread 2022: Viel Glück für alle!

I know you said the office is 1.2mi away. How long does that drive normally take?

About 5 mins in the morning, 10-12 mins in the evenings. Biking is slower more times than not. None of the roads between my house and the office are super friendly for biking. To stay on bike lanes takes you a bit out of the way, and staying on regular roads during rush hour is a little dicey at times.

As for walking, there is one small pocket of an area between our offices that isn’t super safe. I wouldn’t be super excited about my wife walking past after dark by herself. I’m sure I’d be fine 95% of the time, but still.

it's aldi and not even close

then swing by teeter for beer

Aldi is number 1 for us too, but we got to Food Lion the most because it's closest to the house and the Aldi is 20 minutes away.

Also, the bus and Metro options aren’t awesome for me. Metro to my office takes about 25-30 mins based on walking, waiting and transit times. Bus is even slower. Just no good routes. There used to be one when we first moved to this house, but that route shut down 6 or so years ago.

We do close to 100% of shopping at Ingles since it's about 3 mins away and pretty much has everything we need. Wish a Publix or Harris Teeter was closer, but Ingles has nearly a monopoly around town. Go to TJ's like once every 3-4 months and stock up on things but haven't been during the covid era since there's usually a line to get in.

Just to be clear, just because they say it's 100% clean does mean that you are getting electrons from clean energy rather than coal, it's just that these suppliers are trading in RECs to satisfy this statement.

I should have been more precise. They say "100% renewable" not 100% clean. If you read the fine print, it says electricity "made from environmentally friendly fuel resources, such as wind, water, biomass, biogas, waste heat or solar"

We live 1 mile from both a Whole Foods and a Harris Teeter so naturally my wife spends all of her time bitching about how we don’t make the 20 minute drive to Trader Joe’s in Chapel Hill.

TJ's has good frozen options but everything else about that place is incredibly overrated

Lowes, Teeter and Fresh Market guy here. I live less than 5 minutes from all 3.

there was an old Kmart for sale near us and rumors Publix was gonna buy but nope, another Ingles. theoretically to replace the crappy Ingles down the road from it. I read recently that Ingles buys a lot of land locally just so competitors can't go in. but Asheville did get its third Whole Foods recently, replacing EarthFare.

100% Harris Teeter. It's really the only store close to my house and I hate Publix. Probably five (maybe six) HTs closer to my house than the nearest competitor. I guess there's a Fresh Market, a Trader Joe's, Target and an EarthFare close by but I never shop there. More likely to stop by Reid's Fine Foods for specialty meats if I don't get them at HT.

Particularly shitty plagiarism in academia.

Teeter and Trader Joes every week and then once or twice a month to Aldi, Costco, and Whole Foods for specialty items and lower priced staples to stock up on.

You always struck me as a fellow Food Lion sort of guy.

Pre-covid, if I was by myself and had some time to kill, I loved drinking beer while I shopped at Lowes. Now, when I crack open a deuce-deuce of Steel Reserve in my local Food Lion, everybody looks at me with judgmental eyes.
