at some point wakephan will reckon with the fact that i've been in a corporate office for 10+ years and am no longer the 17 year old marxist who thought i could smoke weed my way into philosopher king / shepherd /beat poet / dead tour attender lifestyle that i once was

my latest fantasy is -- instead of working til age whatever at a higher-paying job and then retire -- to work til age whatever less 5 or 10 or so years and take on a low-stress, low-paying job like working in a bookstore

then retire

Sometimes I fantasize about quitting healthcare and working at Costco.

this is what family friends have done, working at the Y in one example and a local donut shop in another

i feel like the service industry isn't that low stress gig for me, so you'd have to find the right thing, but in principle i 100% agree with this strategy

sometimes i fantasize about monetizing an instagram account by stealing content from other people and reposting the pictures but poorly cropped and at a lower resolution

That seems like way more work than stocking shelves at Costco.

have you guys considered being 12 and reviewing toys on youtube for $$$$$$$$

Yeah, I think this all the time. Work my job for another 10 years or so, then get a job as a wildlife ranger doing bird surveys of some wildlife refuge somewhere. once my kids are out of college.

My FIL is in this stage currently. Laid off after a very long career at Ingersoll Rand with a nice severance and retirement package so he just decided to retire at like 58. By no means wealthy, but enough to comfortably retire. The man was born to be a helper at Lowes/Home Depot and needs to do it or he's going to drive my MIL crazy. And occasionally drives me crazy by insisting to come down all the time for our handyman house projects and make me feel like less of a man. I feel like I will be bored AF if I have zero work pursuits whatsoever to occupy my time and I'm not elderly.

A local book store downtown here is moving down the street and is expanding to a two story space with a beer/wine lounge on the second floor. As they get ready to open they just posted about an open position there. I thought about it longer than I should have.

Don't give up the fight bro.

The key is the find a chillish job that pays less than corporate america, but enough to pay the bills and buy booze.

Gotta find that sweet spot between ER Surgeon and pizza maker.

Danny Manning couldn't find the middle ground between 5 star recruits and unranked no names. Forbes does a good job of having a good fallback plan of guys between 175-225. That's the kind of jobs we need.

I always thought being a surveyor would be a cool gig. Get to be outside a lot, use some math but not too much, get to look at old maps and stuff.

This would be a good one.

Or something with even more manual labor like design and build koi ponds, build decks, pressure washing/gutter cleaning, banging Mako's mom.

I feel like TWDeac’s career progression is one to be envied
