2021 Republican Coup (Practice Run)

Good question. Stopped donating when Trump was nominated. I'm a Ryan/Bush Republican, so I call my side out when they cross the line. Here is an example, just foul. Go Liz Cheney, hit them hard and often.

The GOP crossed the line long ago and never looked back. You need to find a new party because your Republican party no longer exists.

Seriously. That was my point. Why do you call them your side? They’re not your side anymore.

It’s like still saying you’re a Wake basketball fan through [Redacted] and Manning.

Of course, political affiliation shouldn’t be like sports fandom.

I’d rather be a Russian than a Dook fan!

If you find yourself voting for laundry rather than the politicians and their ideas/values, you should reassess your life.

I'm not sure I get all the arm waiving about centerdeac. Posting style aside, (1) he said he voted for Biden; and (2) what exactly are people who are actual conservatives supposed to do? If democrats turned into a death cult and nominated Trump, I wouldn't all of a sudden believe that trickle-down economics and oppressing minorities was a solid political philosophy, nor would I want to vote for people who shared those values.

I'm not saying I would continue to vote for democrats in the hypothetical above, but I also wouldn't change my entire political philosophy because of how others act/vote.

Agreed. center will probably end up making the same transition other former conservatives here have made. He’s just a little behind.

Besides, it was someone else (jhmd, IIRC) who claimed Pubs were emerging from some fantastical Trump hangover...not happening of course.

But goodness, there's nothing "center" about considering voting for Pubs anymore. If I was a conservative with a working brain and any concern for honesty/integrity, I'd not vote for another Republican other than MAYBE for some hyper-local thing where party may not matter much.

He, or anyone else in that situation, should identify himself as a conservative and not a Republican. The Republican party that shares his values no longer exists. It has been completely destroyed by Trump and his sycophants.

No doubt. Every time I hear some GOP pol or voter talk about "Republican values" I always think about the fact that in 2020, for the first time ever I believe, a political party didn't write and publicize a platform at their convention. The GOP just copied their 2016 platform and added to it that they supported Donald Trump in 100% of whatever he wanted. That's a personality cult, not a political party.

What does your boardname signify?

I'm an R that votes for centrist Democrats and support the more liberal members of my party. R's that vote for Biden, Roy Barnes and Max Cleland here get called RINOs. I'd likem to think I'm center. Also, studying for my degree, I do line up with moderate Justices.

What gets me are all the pundits and talking heads who are acting as if this is all in the past - we got through 2020 and so we're fine. Thanks to all of these new laws passed in various states it is now much easier for Trumpite legislators to overturn election results and declare their candidate the winner, no matter how legitimate the election results were. What Trump wanted to do in 2020 is even more likely to happen in future elections, and is likely inevitable given current trends within the GOP. Again, I think we're just marking time until either a state GOP overturns a legit election and installs their candidate as the winner, or until they overturn a presidential election. This isn't just something that happened last year, it's likely just a taste of what's coming down the road in 2022 or 2024.

Still waiting for anything to happen to these people.
