BillBrasky Memorial Political Chat Thread

Wait... the big brains on the Tunnels actually believed my post about stray fetuses wandering around aimlessly in birdman's AL neighborhood was serious???

Took you long enough to finally understand how your dumb analogy was. A true stroke of jenius to claim it was a joke ! I've not seen that tactic before !!

Again you’re criticizing people for not paying attention to NY politics. People weren’t ignoring left activists. Hell plenty of people in NY probably didn’t follow the NY Governor primary.

People around the country were living their lives with no reason to care about Albany until NY state politics became a national story. Expecting random left leaning Americans to have a full dossier on Cuomo in April 2020 is ridiculous.

That kind of political elitism is far too common on the left. If you’re not following every little news story everywhere in the country, your opinions shouldn’t matter and you’re not in the club.

Meanwhile, the far right celebrates lack of political engagement and just welcomes people in regardless of their starting point. Democrats and progressives need more of that.

It’s political elitism to discuss politics on a politics board? Sheesh, ok. I don’t begrudge people for not knowing details but I don’t expect the details should be ignored just for not being common knowledge.

As a broader narrative, the entire establishment consensus was (and I posted about the Hillary, NYT, and other endorsements) that Cuomo was their pick over the celebrity leftist choice, which happens time and time again and calls into question their ability or interest in vetting candidates (generously) or that they care about anything other than protecting money and power (cynically). This is a story that repeats over and over. It’s a race to the bottom with both parties I guess.

Anyway I would have thought running a left populist celebrity like Cynthia Nixon in a safe blue state is kinda like what you’re describing in your last paragraph but maybe you’re just attacking me instead.

I can’t tell if you’re purposefully misinterpreting what I say or not. Obviously neither of us was talking about people on this board defending Cuomo when you’ve been talking about a national perspective on Cuomo.

I'm just glad that he's gone, and good riddance. And congrats to New York's first female governor, Kathy Hochul.

Thanks, but I am admitting that I fell into the trap. My wife was really the one that brought me to it. She was pretty despondent at the start of all this mess and would listen to Cuomo every day.

I think your explanation of a then favorable view of Cuomo makes sense. And likely was a common experience.

I mean yeah and I wasn’t saying I thought bird man was wrong because he was a dumb shill or anything.

Again I don't begrudge people for a lack of information or interest; I’m squarely blaming the party and the national media for giving him a completely unearned and uncritical spotlight.

A smart man who recently died said “be kind to people and be ruthless to systems” and I think that’s basically right. Mass media manufactures consent for the narrow ideology 90% of American politicians support. It takes a hell of a lot of digging to find nuance and deep reporting that challenges power structures most of the time, and it’s hard then to know what information is reliable and what’s just slanted trash. I think we probably mostly agree on this topic and are talking past each other.

Yeah. We generally agree here. I don’t think you mentioned mass media before.

excited to be teaching mass communication this semester tbh

never gets boring

I don't hold everyday Americans accountable for briefly liking Cuomo, but I do hold media outlets like CNN accountable for propping him up. There were other options. Inslee did very well with the pandemic IMO, and people knew his name since he had just run for president. There were probably many others.

I don't think this is true, they're (I think we're referring to the same group?) pretty politically engaged - as least as far as I see in their messaging. They certainly aren't more or less welcoming than leftists. Extremism is extremism.

In general, left/right dichotomies are dumb, but maybe that's another discussion.

Political Chat Thread - All Topics & Rants Welcome

Not sure where you’re coming from. The right has been very successful bringing in people who haven’t been politically engaged and feeding their anger with lies and hate like an empty vessel.

Left/right are just words. And it’s not a “dichotomy” if we keep adding adjectives to them so there are much more than two of them. But come up with a better system if you like.

Good point and clarification.

I'm coming from spending a few hours a day (on average) on right-wing platforms for research. Your clarification (bringing in apolitical individuals) makes more sense and is different from celebrating a lack of political engagement, which just isn't true from my perspective.

lol at the second paragraph.

On which platform would you say you see the most troubling rhetoric?

off the cuff public answer is probably /pol/ - 4chan's politics board, but I've been in a private Discord or two that got p awful - I have tried to stay away from private Discords where you can get traced

depends on how you define troubling I guess
