i think the biden plan hikes cap gains tax at 400k and estate tax for estates over $1 or 2 million?

Two great AT sections for that distance would be Carvers Gap to 19E or Fontana Dam to NOC

Both will give you great views and lots of elevation change.

Would require a trail taxi

without getting butthurt someone rich or deaconcav06 tell me why this is actually bad

Without getting too political, my biggest issue w/ capital gains taxes is that you are putting a tax on something that has likely already been taxed. Ostensibly, your invested principal was already taxed once as income. Now they want to tax it again for capital gains? GTFO

In terms of your specific question about which rate is the correct one... I'd argue zero. But if we're doing it, whether it is 25% or 45% for "top earners", I don't really care.

Yeah, reducing a $400K income (Diggler's number), mostly earned in wages, by half in federal, state, and local taxes is ridiculous when compared to someone bringing home millions of dollars by whatever methods, and shielding much of it.

Yeah, this is kind of what I was trying to say. Hadn't scrolled down far enough yet.

Let's get back to mako and how we're going to have to organize a search party for him in a few days when he's attacked by a mountain lion.

Reese’s footballs are the same as the egg. It’s all a lie.

(Still tasty tho)

Mt Mitchell is a great hike - start at the campground at the base and go up and down.

stone Mountain is also a good tough hike.

Crowders Mountain ridgeline trail is a good hike but not particularly strenous - but you can make it up to 25 miles.

We live about 10 minutes from Stone Mountain so I run that loop pretty regularly. Mt. Mitchell is an early favorite right now.

On Saturday my wife is taking the kids to hang out with one of her besties for the day, so I have the entire day to myself and I think I'm gonna spend it hiking. I'm good to drive anywhere within a 3 hour radius of Wilkes and hike up to 25 miles. Where should I go, Pit buddies?

ETA I'd really like for this to bust my ass physically and push my endurance limits.

Start at Massey Gap and take the AT south through Rhododendron Gap and hit up Mt Rogers imo. Grayson Highlands are my favorite East coast hike/camp spot.

i don't understand how we had a tax discussion, DeaconCav was present, and he didn't weigh in.

I do love some Grayson Highlands. It's either that or the profile trail at Grandfather if I decide to do something I've done before. The only issue with Grayson is that we go there around 4-5 times a year because it's relatively close and the kids love the ponies, so I was thinking about going somewhere different. There's a lot of AT out there I've only seen once on the section hikes though, so I may end up going out there anyway.

I just recently had a weekend day off from the kids when my wife went to visit family and I mountain biked until my legs about fell off. Would have done the same the next weekend if not for rain wrecking that plan.

Grayson Highlands has a special place in my heart from lots of scout trips as a kid and taking one incredible camping trip with friends in college where we went super backcountry and found the greatest meadow spot for a few days of total isolation. Just beautiful country.

Not a tax guy but I agree…although it’s first world problems for folks in that situation, $400k seems low for that sort of jump when capital gains are probably a very small part of their earnings. Could have more of a graduated progressive rate but should soak the super high earners whose LTCG income is a much higher proportion of their overall income.

i'm in charge of planning our scout campout for next April and thinking about a 2 day AT trip. We'll have about 25-30 people total and we need to be able to shuttle some cars between beginning and end....prob 15 miles max since some of the boys are small. Proximity to Charlotte is relevant, so I think we have a short stretch that's realistically possible. Any suggestions for that?

Dude remind me to talk to you about scouting. I'm a den leader right now, but I've got about 2 years and I'm going to be in the full program

looks like Grayson Highlands is just 2.5 hours away - would it be a good hike in late april?
