GAMEDAY!

I’m not sure it’s fair to fully judge last night on what was likely a glorified scrimmage.

The play calling was vanilla. No need to give more tape to other teams. I seriously doubt we would be using Heavy Deac that much against UVA or FSU.

This was a full speed practice. The team has plenty of tape on corrections that need to be made.

I hear this every year. "We're holding back". I don't think so. Our play will be just as vanilla with every other game.
1. We don't have a trick play in our arsenal.
2. We pretty much have an offense that dares you to stop us.
Other than beating some high profile teams last night's play calling is as exciting as it gets. It is what it is.

Yeah the fact we never once ran a play with Hinton throwing a pass his senior year says it all in terms of our playcalling.

Well we found out last night what happens when you actually give Walker the appropriate amount of carries. 23 carries, 264 yards, 4 touchdowns. That stings.

why, why, WHY??!

Somebody had said that it was academics. Is that true??

I mean I would assume that it had to do with the fact that he wasn’t the lead back despite obviously being our most talented back, but he said it was because MSU has a pro style offense that was a better fit for him.

Over/under for Heavy Deac plays run against FSU? If it’s lower then 3, I’ll take the Over

I was happy to be wrong about the Wake defense taking time to adjust. However, the Wake D got a lot of help from ODU receivers dropping passes.

I was pretty unhappy that Wake's reserve defense gave up the late touchdown drive to the ODU backup QB. That final drive looked pretty good and Wake didn't put up much resistance.

Walker. I don't need to block. Just let me tote the rock. He was right.

What concerns me isn’t the playcalling, it was the execution. Sam looked off. Especially on the longer throws. There was a touchdown to AT Perry and one to Roberson in which the former was underthrown and the latter was overthrown.

I thought the secondary looks good.

I am also concerned about some of the gaping holes in the middle of the line that they were able to run through.

Some great play out of our younger folks which is good.

My worry is that Roberson seems to be our only superior talent in the offensive skill positions. I like CBS, but he doesn’t have the home run ability of walker.

The RPO is a lot less dynamic when the QB run option is taken out of it, as was done last night. I suspect that was by plan, not just by reads. Save those hits on Sam for when they are needed. I don't expect he runs next week, either.

yeah, it’s a concerning sign that almost no young guys were able to break into the starting lineup (and barely any even in the two-deep).

Agree. Kept waiting to see what game they were reserving it for. It was a long wait.

Yeah, our " vanilla" offense looks a lot like our normal offense to me.

Yesterday did nothing to alleviate the offensive feast-or-famine concerns from last year that I had.

Jasheen Davis trying his best to imitate Boogie. Is he gonna be the "Boogie behind Boogie?"

Yeah he's a monster. Was close to another couple sacks. He's going to be great the next 3 or 4 years.

Nasir being healthy is huge for our secondary.

Mustapha looked EXCELLENT on kickoff coverage. Was first down field everytime and made a couple of nice tackles.

Redd, Smenda, Luke and our interior linemen looking strong.

My concerns/thoughts/questions:
1- can our o line compete at as high a level as we have the last couple seasons?
2- can our outside receivers make up for the loss of Greene?
3- can LB position be an above average ACC position group?
4- can turner, ellison and Cooley make up for the loss of KW3?

Agreed. Nothing methodical. However, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to first game jitters/rust.

Also, we don't have a Scotty Washington, Sage Surratt or Donovan Greene to open up the passing game.

Roberson will get double coverage all season. Morin is steady and Perry looked good, but for our offense to stay as productive as the last few seasons, we will need to find "Sage after Sage", or "Scotty after Scotty"... The light came on for Scotty about this time in A.T Perry's career...hoping it can be him.

Didn't see enough of Banks to have a feeling in positive or negative. Donald Stewart looks to have nice hands, but I don't know if he will be a deep threat for us.

I was not overly impressed with the D-line. We gave up too many rushing yards and QB pressure was not all that strong. Not too concerned about the late TD, we were way into our 3 and 4 deep at that point and those guys just aren't ready, but it was good to get them some experience. Secondary played well, but we need to pressure opposing QB's or there will be breakdowns. Ja'Sir is a great example of keeping your head up and working hard, has gone from consistently having burn marks all over him to being a great corner. Kid deserves lots of credit.

Ke'shawn Williams looked pretty good. Did a nice job of "mirroring" Sam on his TD catch. When Sam went right to escape pressure, Williams went that way too, although it looked like his route was the other way. Result was an easy throw and catch TD.

I was impressed with the receivers. Roberson is a known, Perry had a good game, Moran can play, Williams has skill. I think we'll be as good as we could hope without Greene.
