2022 Atlanta Braves Season Thread: off season decisions loom

Such an intense game, wish Freddie could have found a hole with that last at-bat. Still nice to see Chapman fall apart, and to not let the game get away after all those calls.

The Joc hit by pitch has to be one of the strangest things I've ever seen. He'd barely started his swing when the ball hit him in the hand. Announcers were trying to figure out if it was a foul tip or if it hit him, everyone reacted like it was a dead ball, then the umpire's making the out sign. At first it looked like the umpire was arguing with Joc saying it didn't hit him, then said he swung at it before it hit him, then he tossed him after a weird delay. Same umpire seemed to really enjoy calling Freddie out at home, punching out Albies on a ball outside that he wouldn't give our pitchers all night, etc. Really awful job all night by that ump.

The Joc play was strange. It had to either be a HBP or foul ball, right? The catcher didn't catch the ball or field it in play and throw to first. I'm not sure how it results in an out.

Pretty much the same thing here, but yeah it can be a strikeout hit-by-pitch if you swing prior to getting hit and/or you don't try to stop your swing. But this was particularly egregious because he doesn't call for the 3rd base umpire to help and it was an extremely close call as to whether he broke the plane, plus he got hit at the very beginning of the swing and then his body twisting to try to get out of the way was what potentially made the bat break the plane after he was hit. Add how quickly he made the call and the excitement on top was also pretty bad. Usually that call is saved for someone fully swinging through a pitch running in that ends up hitting the batter's leg or something after he misses it. Imagine a player starting to swing at a 100mph fastball and getting drilled in the head, and in turning away from the pitch the bat technically goes over the plate and breaks the plane. Ridiculous. The video below was questionable and he was much further into his swing than Joc was when he got hit, plus the ump appealed to first.

Ok. I assumed that if you swung and the ball hits you in the hand or arm and lands in play, then you would have a live ball.

Martin's 0-1 pitch to Turner that was called a ball was criminal. Perfect outside strike. Could have certainly changed the AB.

When will baseball adopt robot ump strike zone? It's badly needed. First time there are no linesman at the US Open this year (just the electronic hawkeye system), and it seems to be working great.

Ump squeezed max all night, too. Remember a couple of perfect outside breaking balls being called balls.

Not much we could’ve done differently besides having a better pen. May win the division but with this bullpen, we aren’t getting far. Especially when Snitker insists on using Will Smith as our closer instead of RichRod.

It is hard for me to get worked up over ball and strike calls because they are not uncommon, but it was a little hard to see that Martin pitch called a ball and then see that first pitch of the next inning to darnaud called a strike.

In the end the bullpen just is not good enough. One more reliable arm and the Braves might have taken the series. If they make the playoffs maybe one of the starters can successfully switch to the bullpen.

Nice play by Freddie will probably cost them the game. Maybe you don't give him Harper money. There are cheaper 1b

Lol if you could point out where anyone has suggested giving Freddie $330 million please post it here

After completing the series today against the pesky Rockies, the Braves head West for a long 11 game road trip (Giants, D-Backs and Padres), which includes the completion of the Padres/Braves game in Atlanta which was suspended in the 5th and Padres leading 5-4. While the Braves are out West, the Phillies will be playing the Mets, the Orioles and the Pirates, but in September, the Phillies have already lost series to the Marlins and Rockies. Hard to believe how awful the NL East has been given that some projected it as the best MLB division heading into the season.

Phillies got within one game but now we're back 3 up and 4 in the loss column.

Phillies currently in a series with Baltimore followed by the Pirates, @Atlanta, and @Miami to finish their season. We really need to put some distance between us in Arizona before our series with philly.
