Official CFP Rankings Thread - #16 Deacs (#15 Pitt, #18 State, #20 Clemson)

Yeah. Anybody who actually bothered to look at our defense would see how ridiculous that is. Tied for 10th in getting turnovers. Firmly mediocre in giving up yards and points despite one bad game.

For example, UNC is 4-0 when they score 35 and 0-4 when they don’t. Our defense only allowed 35 in regulation once against Army. That just happens to be all the talking heads know about our defense. And guess what? UNC gives up 6.9 more points a game than Wake.

Bingo

I think we're going to beat UNC in something like that looks like the Virginia game perhaps with a few more style points. Something around 48-24. Despite winning big as a ranked road dog, despite FPI saying we'll lose, the narrative will be "See? Told you Wake doesn't play anybody!"

Carolina has a losing record !

This popped into my head today when talking to a friend about how the game could go well for us.

While NC State is the better team, think this is a tougher matchup for Wake. UNC has flaws, but they have shown flashes of great play. State plods a bit on offense with a strong defense. Nothing looks dynamic. That kind of team won't be able to keep up with us, IMO. Goats can, and they have generally been much better at home putting up lots of points.

The way we handled Virginia makes me a bit more comfortable. We need that kind of defensive effort this game.

Josh Downs (best in the ACC) is a legit No. 1 and their whole passing offense goes through him. I would love to see a Belichick type defense where we double him all game and force them to go to their other players, even if that means Howell has a big running day. Their defense doesn't have that option against us as @ and Roberson can both go off.

Aside from Army, our defense gives up 19.3. That’s on par with Ohio State which is #19 in the country.

If you don’t count all the points we gave up to Syracuse the average goes down even more !

I listened some to the Dusty and Danny morning show on ESPNU radio and one of them was saying how Bama would be out if they lost to Georgia and the other was like "well, if it's close..." Fuck that, that game is an elimination game for Bama, assuming they don't already lose to Auburn. Someone said, well we should talk about Wake and they basically said, yeah they're gonna lose, I mean they're underdogs in Chapel Hill this week and have a tough schedule. Plus they haven't beaten anyone.

WTF. Clemson was close

Can't guess how Saturday will go. But you are dead on with the latter. Wake can never beat anyone good because anyone who loses to Wake isn't good.

Carolina wins and it's all, see we knew they were great all along, they just had some stumbles. They lose it'll be that we beat a 4-5 team, losing record, doesn't count.

State beats us and it's all about them climbing the rankings, beating a top 10 team. They lose and it's another non-top 25 win for Wake. Ho hum.

Wake is the Rodney Dangerfield of college football.

We have performed well above expectations this year, and could continue that with the schedule in front of us. Clawson is still trying to build us into a consistent championship type contender, much like what Dabo had done at Clemson until this year ( anybody expect Clemson to be this bad next year ?). I hope that we go undefeated, go to a New Year's 6 bowl and beat somebody nationally recognized that we have a chance to beat ( Auburn, Tx A&M, Ok, Michigan, Mich St., Oregon, Cincy, ND ). We're not gonna beat Bama or Ga. in a playoff semi, not yet. Clawson needs this to be a stepping stone year rather than a one-off year for the fans. It would be exciting for the fans to make the playoff. But the bubble would burst and we'd be back to lowf in everybody'd mind. Let's go undefeated for the season including a very good bowl win, and prove something to recruits, our players, our coaches, and the media. Then do it again next year, and we have something real.

Exactly. Look at State.... 2 bad losses, BUT they beat Clemson at home... A Clemson team that we now all know sucks, especially on the road. Because of that "big win" state is only 9 spots behind us. However, if Wake wins out and beats Clemson on the road, well wake didn't play anyone. Lol

Look at Pitt. They lost to Western Michigan at home but were the media darling of the ACC after they beat Clemson in Death Valley.

But if Wake wins, the story will be “Can a win at Clemson really be a quality win this year?”

you can control your OOC schedule and how tough of teams you play, but you can't help how good those teams are once you play or if your conference mates aren't having great years . and plenty of OOC games are scheduled so far in advance there's no telling how teams will be. take Auburn, they're such a hot and cold team that one year you might get a Cam Newton-type year, another you get Gus Malzahn's or Tubberville's last year. No way to tell how they'll be when you schedule them 10 years out. Clearly we just scheduled Carolina to renew the rivalry, but turns out they were a preseason top 10, so going into the year we had one of the better OOC opponents in the conference.

and regarding the Cincy argument, they clearly realized it's best for them to be in a P5 league, so no sympathy if they don't make it this year.

Pitt beat Clemson at Pitt.

My bad.

What gets me is the people who are like “Justice for Cincy!” and calling out the system for making it hard for G5 teams. Then they either don’t even mention Wake or the next sentence is “The ACC is weak. Wake hasn’t played anybody.”

It's a TV show. Don't expect too much. It's like Fox News or MSNBC.
