BillBrasky Memorial Political Chat Thread

The ovation for a defense witness on veterans day was a bit much. How could that prejudice a jury?

WaPo: An Air Force sergeant killed himself on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The note he left is heartbreaking.

The word victim is a loaded word. It’s use in criminal trials been litigated in every jurisdiction in this country for decades. There’s no definitive rule on its usage. In NC, its use in trials and jury instructions is permitted in the discretion of the trial judge. Many trial judges still won’t allow it. The judge disallowing it in this case, as is his normal practice apparently, is a big nothing burger. Those who usually find themselves on the progressive end of criminal justice advocacy should applaud this judge for that ruling.

Seems like suggesting that everybody give a defense witness a round of applause as a veteran on Veterans Day might be a wee bit prejudical?

understand both sides on this -- issue to me is that I understand the judge permitted the victims to be called looters and rioters.

Also bad. This judge is the epitome of old white conservative judge who has been there forever, has been corrupted by his power, has an enormous ego and cannot be wrong or challenged, and is basically Palpatine.

Dude also made a weird and cringe Asian food joke, had a loud God Bless the USA ringtone go off (Trump/'Greenwood have destroyed the song), lambasted the prosecution in a way over the top manner and called them liars, and generally was considered to favor prosecutors before this case (wonder why it changed). He's really bad.

He actually didn't. From what I heard on Opening Arguments, he said they could be called looters and rioters in the closing argument if they could be proven as such.

I think there's horrible stuff the judge has done, but victims and looters / rioters aren't part of it. And, they're not going to be why Rittenhouse is going to walk free.

OK -- still think those are loaded terms and any of those actions are irrelevant to the case.
