Wake at Clemson - Saturday 11/20 Game Time Speculation

What I don’t understand is how we have such a big talent gap between offense and defense. It’s not like we have 4/5 star guys on offense but for whatever reason- just seem to find more talent there in recruiting- guys like KW9, Dortch, Sage, ATP, Roberson, Key Williams, Cooley, CBS, etc. weren’t exactly blue chip recruits but we seem to have more depth there and can re-load.

The only reason I can think of is when Clawson first got here we were pretty good on defense and our offense was horrid, we had a terrible Oline and no playmakers, so the emphasis has been on getting offensive talent and the defense has suffered.

Yeah and obviously you can scheme more on offense than D but I feel like we were even better on D in the pre-Fresh Deacs Grobe era- ie 2001 - 2004 than we are now.

If we had a DC that schemed as well as Rug (other than the lack of quick hitting plays in the first 3-4 drives today), we’d give 30% less yardage and 50% less points. We have the worst defensive coordinator in the country, and I’m not sure it’s close. Pop Warner coaches teach better tackling, as well.

Yeah we can’t overcome bad coaching/scheming - especially on D. Just don’t have the talent and depth most teams we play do

I don't think any of us know more than Clawson. He's not going to publicly throw anyone under the bus for obvious reasons. But he knows he has a ton of work to get done off-season on the defensive side of the ball.

I trust he'll make the necessary moves. I suspect he will start with the DC. If he was willing to fire a guy 4 games into a season, he'll have no issue doing it in January.

Grobe was a defensive coach too. Clawson played defense, but has coached offense primarily during his career I think. I hope he decides to bring in a new DC that has a history of success maybe at places without the most talent in the world.

Look our Linebackers are bad and our DBs are good but small.

On the other side Clemson rushes 7 guys and then mugs the wide receivers. The refs don’t make the obvious calls and play to the crowd. It’s a completely unfair setup. Obvious lacking any subtlety. Like fucking Duke at Cameron same shit

Wish we would try the pressure approach and coach DBs to do their best and just mug if they feel they have lost position and make refs call PI. Can’t be worse than our current efforts and filling all the gaps should shut down run as well. Would so much rather get beat in the air than just getting punched in mouth on the ground.

South Carolina defense just got penalized for giving disconcerting signals during the Auburn snap count. Is this what DC was so upset about today? It does get called!

I think it’s blatantly obvious we need to get healthy fast. We are not deep enough talent wise to be missing 3-4 of our most valuable skill players. Proven today. We aren’t shutting out BC next week, so time for the Strength and Conditioning staff, medical staff, and offensive staff to earn their keep. We need to be healthy, durable, offensively creative, and ready for a 42-35 type shootout in Chestnut Hill to win the division. Huge week ahead. Go Deacs!
Blatantly obvious? That’s redundantly redundant.

Yes, I think that was it. I was interested if anyone would ask him post-game. There were a ton of motion penalties.

Three plays that stick out to me

1 - The first WF drive no-call on Perry down the left sideline. Clemson coaches must have been thrilled, their game plan would be effective if they could be physical (fouling) on the outside while blitzing. If that was called PI and the standard was set that grabbing guys 1-on-1 would not work, think there would have been way less pressure on the Hitman.

2 - The (twice) almost sack of DJ on third down where he spun out and completed a long pass down the right sideline

3 - The Turner fumble right after Clemson's fumble forced by Bothroyd. Once Clemson scored after that, felt like the game was out of reach.

I'm not sure we'll have a new DC next year. Sawvel was an outsider to this staff. Current guy is not and unlike in 2018, Clawson has not really been publicly critical of the D this season.

The frustrating part is it seems like we have players in the right place a lot of the time, but we miss the first tackle every time. I wonder how many yards we have given up after first contact this year.

The same conversation comes up year after year after we get our asses smacked by Clempsun. I never bought into the bullshit that Clemson is "down" or Clemson is bad this year.

I feel good about the BC game and think we have a great shot to finish the damn thing in front of less than half full stadium. Yes the defense is an issue and has been for quite some time. I knew the Carolina/Clemson games were going to be tough and didn't expect to win in Death Valley (not many teams do). I really expect Clawson to make a change in the off season. I feel like as good as the Wake coaching staff is, the dc spot needs a change.

We as a fanbase need to learn to control ourselves. A so called fan was yapping that when needed better players and when Bothroyd’s mom said something that they are kids not professionals He proceeds in telling her to tell him to tackle better and we need to fire Hemphill. I get wanting to fire Hemphill but let’s not attack our kids especially in front of their parents.

I ... would suggest revisiting quotes from mid-week presser between UNC and State games.

Clemson has won like 35 games straight at home. The key will be to focus on the BIG PRIZE next week. Clawson needs to get the team re-focused ASAP and I think he will.

We can finish 10-2. There's plenty to bitch about on defense but I think every player and coach knows that. How we fix it next year will be the challenge.
