Duke hiring Hemphill. The search for a new DC begins!

Don't see Clawson hiring a big name (e.g., a former HC). Think Clawson is so well-connected in coaching circles that he will hire someone that few of us know about, but is a potential future super-star. 6 years ago Marcus Freeman was a 29 year-old LB coach at Purdue. He got the Cincy DC job at age 31, ND DC at at 34, and he's now their head coach. Clawson may pluck someone like that.

based on nothing, I kinda expect an internal promotion

I’m afraid that since we have a chance at a big season next year with the offense that Clawson doesn’t think this is the off-season to implement a new system. And that will lead to an internal hire.

If Clawson does make an internal hire, Paul Williams, cornerbacks coach would be my choice.

Cohen (Assistant Head Coach/Defense, Defensive Line) would be the pick based on current title/seniority.

Ohio State fired their defensive coordinator and brought in an outside hire for the specific reason that they think their offense can do big things. Now is the time to improve the other side of the ball for that exact reason.

Clawson has had plenty of opportunities to promote Cohen and he hasn’t. I don't see that happening. An internal promotion would be a wasted opportunity.

This move makes a lot of sense for Hemphill. Elko is a mover and shaker. Lea went with Elko to be ND LB coach instead of staying to be the Wake DC. A year later, Lea was the ND DC and 3 more years later, he was at Vandy. Hemphill could rehab his rep under Elko and do the same thing in a few steps.

would be funny if we brought back santucci under texas a&m's nose (although not crazy to think he'd be given a shot at the role if they have a good performance in the gator bowl) -- but will take that to the other thread.

nice job by clawson to get rid of him while still ensuring he had a nice landing spot -- pays off long-term i think.

don't think hemphill would have been let go if we were looking at an internal promotion. plus there aren't many new guys on staff from when hemphill got the job in the first place from what i can tell.

How would implementing a new defensive scheme have any impact on the offense?

I get the sense Hemphill is a good football mind and will in time be a good DC, but he wasn’t ready for the role this year.

Not knowing anything else, I base the above opinion on how this was handled by Clawson relative to how Sawvel’s removal went down. It appears he thinks highly enough of Hemphill to want to land on his feet, but also likely would’ve made a move just judging by Hemphill taking a step back.

My thought process is that implementing a new system takes time, so our defense may get worse before it gets better. And with our offense next year we have a chance at a really big season.

But then not only am I not a football coach, I am not Dave Clawson. So I could be way wrong.

My thought on Hemphill is that he was a very good safeties coach(was always a strong position) and good play caller(dialed up plenty of great blitzes), but he struggled with coordinating/game planning/adjusting.

Ahh ok. My thought process is that Clawson has built something sustainable at this point so you do it whenever.

Don’t really see Clawson making a short term decision based on next year’s potential record. He’s far too patient and has demonstrated too much of a long term vision for that.

A different defensive system would require players with different skill sets and body types. Those players probably aren't on the team today. Multiple defensive guys could suddenly find that their skill sets don't fit the new scheme. That could result in the defense being worse before it gets better. Retooling like tOSU did during the season is rarely done successfully. It's even tough to do during a single off-season.

Yup. Get someone young and hungry.
