Next year’s football team

0%. I'm not even sure he'd make it into the preseason. There's a ton of guys who can kick and almost all of them have shown they have a bigger leg than Sciba.

yeah, Joey Slye is a terrible kicker but occasionally he'll boom in a 57-yarder so he sticks around

There's no shame in being a great college kicker who doesn't make it to the NFL. You've got to be one of the 32 best kickers who have come out of college in the last 15 or so years. There are maybe 4-5 rookie kickers on opening day rosters most years.

I'm not even sure if Swank kicked in the preseason and he was a better pro prospect than Sciba due to his length.

I don’t want this to come across as negative, but what are Sciba’s NFL chances right now?

Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a phenomenal kicker, but I’m not sure we’ve seen enough of him from distance to think he has a legit NFL shot. At least right now.

Hope he comes back for another run.

Sciba doesn't have the leg to routinely put kickoffs in the end zone. That is a requirement for NFL kickers.

Love sciba but no chance of making NFL , much better for him to come back and become all time leading scorer in acc history

With the receiving corps Wake will have next year, I would be tempted to just line up and throw the ball, forget about the RPO sometimes. Not many teams could cover all the great WRs Wake could put on the field.

I mean our WRs are likely as successful as they are because of the RPO, not in spite of it. It’s a lot harder to cover a WR if you are also worried about having to stop the run for the first 2 seconds of the play.

Without a doubt the spread slow RPO offense helps the WRs. It also helps create more time for Hartman in the pocket where defenders hesitate between playing the run vs the pass.

It's probably important to also say that the WRs are not products of this system as they are really talented and would do well in almost any system. Still, the current system does provide some unique benefits in how the RPO operates and what it does to the defense but that's the point of an offensive scheme - maximize player utility and benefits.

You could probably also make an argument that the offense creates some unique demands for the WRs as well since super quick hitting passes are not routine, but rather they are asked to be open and/or ready for the pass after the normal RPO mesh occurs. So outside the plays where WF doesn't use the RPO post-snap (some plays are RPO but Hartman decides pre-snap to pass plus some fully non-RPO plays), the receivers cannot rely on immediately beating their man and getting the ball quickly.

It's been a strange phenomenon to watch our team routinely mix in non-mesh running and passing plays this year, only to have it go almost completely unnoticed by a lot of the posters who routinely complain about the slow mesh action.

When you combine that with the numbers our offense put up, it's really hard to take the criticism seriously.

I'm all in favor of as much variety in the offense as reasonably possible. With more speed at slot receiver, I'd like to see a few orbit motion/jet sweep plays. Could be run as a variant of the RPO. WR goes in orbit motion. QB pulls ball and hands ball to orbit WR for jet sweep or throws pass to WR further downfield.

Where's Willie Idelette or Kevin Marion when you need em?

Who is the fastest player on the team? I don’t think we have a flat out burner like Idlette, Marion, or John Stone. Williams may be our fastest WR but he’s not that level of fast that I’ve seen.

If you're talking about me, you missed what I was saying. I like the offense but when WF is running the mesh RPO most often it does cause the WRs to have a slight different choice in what routes are going to be available given the time between the snap and when the RPO is finished a few seconds later vs a direct drop back and throw within 2-3 seconds.

Wake’s offense is so much better in the RPO. There were some times this year, most notably the end of the UNC game, during which Wake switched out of the RPO and the passing offense was way too predictable.

As mentioned earlier, when Wake mixed up the RPO and more traditional drop-back sets during the game, it worked, but when Wake completely abandoned the RPO, it didn’t. The last drive of the UNC game was the worst - we had almost 3 minutes left and barely managed 1 first down. We had plenty of time to run the RPO. Abandoning it was really frustrating.

A burner at WR would be on my wish list for the 23 recruiting class.
