Hang it! (Alondes Williams ACC POY, 1st Team All-ACC)

Alondes was on the list of Honrable Mention players in the All-American selections just announced.

https://apnews.com/article/march-ma...a-basketball-59b4ecbd6a5d4c7d54f7ec95b7cc01d5

I can't find any history of Honorable Mention players but I know Jeff Teague was our last All-America selection (second team in 2009)

Full list:

Tim Duncan x2: 1996 (1st Team), 1997 (1st Team)
Rod Griffin x2: 1977 (2nd team), 1978 (2nd Team)
Len Chappell: 1962 (1st Team)
Randolph Childress: 1995 (2nd Team)
Josh Howard: 2003 (1st Team)
Chris Paul: 2005 (1st Team)
Dickie Hemric: 1955 (2nd team)
Rodgey Rodgers: 1993 (2nd team)
Jeff Teague: 2009 (2nd team)

I would assume all of these jerseys are hung with the exception of Teague. Wonder if we ever had a "HANG IT" Teague thread?

Funny to me that Banchero gets 3rd team All American while Alondes and Bacot are only honorable mention. He got next to no love for ACC POY, but AP still give him AA status.

Interesting that Hemric was only 2nd team but graduated with numbers that weren't surpassed for many years...

It was all coaching, all schemes, all poor competition, all low conference standards, all anything besides him being that good, those years…

He still holds the ACC career rebounding record at 1802. He is 5th all time in NCAA Div1 men's basketball. Tim D is second in the ACC with 1570.

On paper Hemric was a beast. He’s probably who we owe for being in the ACC.

His Freshman & Soph years were in the So Con. Without him, we would not have been attractive to the break away crowd at the Sedge.

That’s likely not true, but I’m sure it feels good to say it. The Big 4 was a real rivalry in the 50s. Hard to imagine it not being a package deal.

When exactly do you think Hemric played?

It’s not a compliment to Wake Forest. Without Hemric, we are relegated to the reality of games with Wofford and Furman. Our pathetic record in the revenue sport the ensuing 70 years demonstrates just how instrumental he was to our University’s relevance. I have him as #1 over President Tribble.

Hemric changed Wake Forest for the better. Just as Len Chappell, Charlie Davis, Randolph Childress, & Tim Duncan did.

The only credible debate about Jersey retirement involves Rodney Rogers.

Sadly, Wake Forest alums chose instead to retire jerseys of one hit wonder February feel good stories. As a result, we are now stuck having to clean it up one day.

During a time when the state of NC had Easter monday as a state holiday due to a wfu ncsu baseball game. But clearly Wake wouldn't have been invited to the ACC if not for Dickie Hemric. Lol

Our resident expert on everything is also overlooking the influence of Peahead Walker. Wake was 77-51 in football when he coached from '37 to '50. We were a bit of a football powerhouse. Pretty sure that was more important to our ACC invitation than one good basketball player.

The ACC was actually started because of football. The Southern Conference had started to ban their member schools from participating in bowl games. I don't know if I would call Wake a football powerhouse back then, but we were pretty good.

The historical events in Wake Sports history are quite compelling. A history of survival. Among the topics one might peruse are the following.

History of scholarship limits
800 SAT rule in the ACC
Rise of Women's Sports
Freshman participation
The acquisition of radio/ tv revenue
The rise of NCAA power
The fall of NCAA power
The 4 athletic directors
Non revenue sports
NIL
Portal
Coaches contracts
Ten more things
The idea our history is relegated to the decisions on the venues we have played in is a factor, but far outweighed by the monumental changes in college sports over time. And especially the ACC. South Carolina left because of 800 rule. The SEC had no such rule. Historically significant. Just one example.

I’ll tell you who isn’t historically significant: Alondes Williams

This thread was a farce. It symbolized our team and fan bases’ attitude. It translated to another disaster.

There’s nothing to clean up. Rogers, Bogues, Brown and Griffin aren’t coming down when they die or any other time. Accept it. Deal with it. Move on. Go to California to pull for Duke and understand that nobody else shares your opinion. And, moreover, that you don’t have the power to influence such an unfair and ignorant thing.

Quick! The Hemric argument was just proven farcical on its face. Time to...
