“Inside WakeyLeaks” from The Athletic

I had UNCC as tops, Vance next, then Davidson, Charlotte Catholic, Hough and Butler, hence my statement that Davidson is "somewhere between" UNCC and Butler. Myers Park has also had some decent teams as has Charlotte Latin when they have an elite QB. But one thing I hope you'd agree on, when it comes to Wildcats in Mecklenburg County, Davidson's are clearly superior to the Wildcats oat Garinger.

You obviously have a hard on for Davidson. That's cool. Go post on their board and see if you can ask them why they employ a scumbag like Ray McCartney.

No "hard on"; in fact can't tell you the name of a single crurent player on the team, but at one time i did follow them fairly closely and still check their scores during the season. Best I can tell, they're doing o.k. for a non-scholarship DII program. I don't think Wakey Leaks was known at the time McCartney was hired at Davidson, but agree with you he's a scumbag.

McCartney was hired by Davidson after Wakeyleaks.

I don’t recall what Ray McCartney has to do with this story, but I’m digging the fury. LocomotiveBreath I hope I never piss you off, brother.

McCartney was one of the Wakeyleaks cheaters.

Yep. McCartney went to Army right after leaving Wake. Army was the 4th game of Clawson's first season and his first FBS win at Wake.

Yet we still play Army I guess because Mike Buddie is the AD and he played a big part of bringing Clawson to Wake.

The guy made a mistake, he apologized. It's time to move on. He is a human being and we are entitled to mistakes. How many of you have never made a mistake?

I’m late to this party, but what a terrible take. Let’s all move on and make sure we don’t upset any of the big boys. Stay in our place. Kids may have had their chances at furthering their football careers ruined, coaches were clearly questioning their own competence, kids may have been hurt. How many times did Wolford get hit when he wouldn’t have? How might that have affected him in the long term physically or brain damage wise? What effect did he have on the confidence of these kids? And they are kids. This jerk was affecting innocent kids, who usually were underrated and underrecruited- and working their asses off, wondering why they weren’t good enough. Those are our fellow alums. Fuck Elrod. I wish Wake did half of what it did for him for many of the football players who graduated from Wake that I know are still holding down barely above minimum wage jobs, but still watching every game and saving up to go to a bowl game. This guy should have a reminder of this every day of his life.

I can also confirm that the players hated McCartney. He was always an asshat who obviously didn’t give two fucks about WF or the guys who gave their bodies for him.

Holy smokes, never thought I'd see the high school alma mater mentioned on here. I think we won 7 or 8 games total while I was in school there, which was about how many they won in an entire 15-year stretch at one point in the 2000's.

Big part of the problem was the "jobs for life" mentality Grobe fostered with the staff where he wouldn't get rid of anyone and largely just promoted from within. Given that I can see how somebody would be salty when that didn't come to fruition for him.

But of course primarily just dumb as shit to make a coach who was essentially fired part of the radio team

At the time it made sense. In retrospect it was a bad decision.

Elrod is a Wake grad. He had just gone through losing a young child to cancer. His wife had a good job in Winston. I am sure the Wake administration thought they were doing the right thing to ease the transition out of coaching at Wake for a Wake alum. Obviously he repaid that by taking a major dump on Wake football.

But not in retrospect, it’s not a good idea to carve out very competitive jobs for inexperienced sports alums just because they want them. It’s telling that Wake spent so many years and $$$ starting Elrod, Rusty, and Childress’ coaching careers and none of them stayed in coaching after Wake.

Elrod (and maybe some Grobe recruits) the only one who has been able to slow down a Warren R offense tho, gotta give some respect there

Respect for using the playbook in a malicious way? Is this serious?

I applaud Wake for trying. I wish they had the same energy for a lot of the Black student athletes.
