Sam Hartman

Honestly, if he was for sure transferring I almost feel like we should’ve played Griffis in the bowl. I know the record was at stake, but bowls are also prep for next year. Graduating and moving on is one thing. Transferring is different. Announcers in this Coastal/ECU game are ripping Coastal for letting McCall play when he’s already said he’s transferring.
Man disagree completely that bowls are for next year’s team. It’s a reward for this year’s team. It’d be fucked up if a coach totally iced out any players (like Sam or rondell) who played hard and led all year but had decided to move on.

Call me old school, but athletes should be happy to be a part of the education process. Under the old system, athletes were being fairly compensated for the learning they get from an elite university. Only schools with lesser academics should have to pay athletes to make up for their shit degrees.

I heard rumors Louisville offered Hartman $1 million just to raise their APR and graduation rate

I tend to agree. It was just a musing. The win means a lot to us (and me). Although it would be nice for Griffis to have had some legit PT against a P5 team before he’s lined up going against Sam.

Do we know $3 million to be an accurate figure? That seems absolutely absurd for 12 games of football. Then again, it's Notre Dame.
We don’t know anything about these numbers because many articles have been written about how sportswriters and especially the sports sites inflate these by at least double just to sensationalize things. Only ones who know for sure are Sam & his family (plus NIL payers) and I bet they ain’t saying. Remember Narduzzi was saying Drake Maye was offered $5 mill by two different sources.

One of the reasons Sam is so high on many people's lists is that he has had a lot of experience reading defenses and reacting run/pass off his reads.

One thing about the slow mesh RPO is that the QB is reading the defense pre-snap and as he walks the ball up with the running back. The actual play call isn't made until the QB either pulls the ball and sets up to pass or has the back keep the ball and go. In the Wake slow mesh, that occurs about 2 seconds after the snap. So in a sense, Sam is calling an audible from a group of possible plays on every slow mesh play Wake runs.

Why trust the sportswriters writing about sportswriters sensationalizing?? Who will sportswrite the sportswriters writing about the sport:writers?

IMO zero reason to risk Griffis getting hurt in what is essentially an exhibition game.

This would upset me more if Sam had developed here for 3 years and gone elsewhere for a 4th. But he has given us five years and has a free one due to Covid. He is, IMO, not an NFL quality QB right now but has invested 5 years-- and 6 when all is said and done-- in developing the experience needed to be one. It is fair to expect him to chase those dreams before he has to fall back on his Wake (or ND) degree. Running the slow mesh isn't going to tell NFL guys much about his ability to run NFL style sets. Going to ND for a year, or really any number of places, will tell NFL guys more than him staying at Wake one more year. And if he can get more $ for it, he might as well.

The guys who were recruited behind him also didn't expect to have to have to wait 100 years to get their shot due to Covid, so I also think this decision is partly about them.

Not looking forward to the ND meltdown when he has one of his 5 turnover games though.

He's really good.

Solid, good leader, great stats. Good guy, easy to pull for. All-time WFU great.

Then out of nowhere, he has a quarter, half or game that is so bad, I wonder how that bad is actually humanly possible.

They're not paying $3M for Hartman to play 12 games for them - they're paying him to play 14 games for them and hold a trophy at the end of it all

Good luck with that. ND is never going to win another national championship.

I love Sam and what he done for Wake, but fuck going to ND. You gotta draw the line somewhere. If he went to UNC, Duke or State, would that be ok? ND not quite the same, but it’s not far down the list.

The announcers are wrong. McCall is the best player in program history, and the only chance for Coastal to be competitive is for McCall to play. Understand that part of the bowl experience is developmental, but "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME"; not fair to the rest of the roster to play an inferior player because it might help him in 2023. Also, Coastal is going through a transition to a new coach, so it's not like the backup QB would be getting experience with next year's system.
McCall got hurt btw.

NIL is turning out to be a ridiculous black hole. Can't wait for the IRS to start collection activity when guys aren't making their estimated tax payments (they're independent contractors) filing and paying taxes on time. Pro players are W2 employees, college players with NIL deals are not.
