Currently, there are two ways to build a Super Bowl contender:

AFC way:

Be terrible and then draft a franchise QB that raises the entire level of the team: KC, Cincy, Buffalo, possibly Jax. Once the rookie deal is done, you going to have pay huge money to your QB which typically leaves roster holes.

NFC way:

Find a lesser QB or later round QB, then use your reduced financial commitment to the QB to fund a deep roster everywhere else: SF, Philly.

The NFL teams that suck are teams that heavily invested in the QB, but he is terrible; so, you have a flawed roster and a mediocre QB: Denver, Indy, Raiders, Green Bay (this year).

My guess is a 2 or 3 year deal somewhere in the $25M/year range. That would put him right about 15th in the league. Honestly I think they could get him for like $15-20M because I don't think anyone else would give him more than that, but they'll juice him a little to keep up their perceived confidence in him.

You could have maybe gotten him for 3 years/$20 million per prior to this year...no chance after this year. I'd be surprised if he gets less than $28/$30 million per year after the season he just had (and seeing what other QB's are currently being trotted out there).

I thought Dak's contract was bad but being the 8th highest of QBs not on their rookie deals isn't God awful. Still a little high but if that's the going rate for QBs then it is more understandable what Jerruh did

Dak has another 2 years on his deal at $40 mil per, but could be released next year although the cap hit would not be friendly.

INMO, Dallas should take a QB this year again in the 3rd or 4th round (Dak was a 4th round selection) unless they really think Cooper Rush could be some kind of a bridge QB.

As I mentioned above, we are really just stuck and it looks more and more like Dan Quinn will get another shot at being a HC so defense may take a turn for worse. Until Jerry gives up control or Stephen and family take it away, the NFC title game and or Super Bowl are out of reach.

The thing about the NFL is that you can escape purgatory pretty quickly.

For example, the Bengals were:
2016 - 6-9-1
2017 - 7-9
2018 - 6-10
2019 - 2-14 (Zac Taylor's 1st Year)
2020 - 4-11-1

And now they've had 2 strong seasons in a row.

They hadn't won a playoff game since 1990 (0-7 in Wild Card from '91-'20) and are now 5-0 in the playoffs the last 2 years. (EDIT: That should read 5-1 given the Super Bowl loss)

KC was pretty blah until they hired Reid (who turned things around in Year 1).
Similar story with SF, who went through Tomsula and Chip Kelly after Harbaugh left, and had two shitty years with Shanahan before things took off in Year 3.

This VASTLY undersells how bad the Bengals were for the last 30 years. It was not easy for them to turn it around.
