China: Taiwan Tensions

I'd imagine it's sabre rattling more than anything. China can garner info they'd like through better means than this.
Agreed. It's that cat and mouse game that's constantly being played by both sides. Curious as to how early the government knew about it.

I imagine some of it was keeping it up so we could see what we could do to jam/interfere with it.

Hard to believe there were 3 that no one took a picture of given this one was clearly visible

I think part of the issue is that we have pilots who can line up multiple planes with precision to refuel in the air. They can snag the landing cable on a carrier and come to a stop in a few hundred feet. Mav and Goose can fly upside down on top of a Mig while giving them the finger.

But during the entire course of this thing coasting across the continent without propulsion, we couldn't get one plane with a hook to snag it, pop the balloon, and bring it down to the ground? Instead we needed to let it run its course, blow it up, and comb the ocean for debris instead of just towing it out of the sky in one piece and finding out everything we wanted to know about it. There was no reason to let it work its way across the country as another sign of Biden's ineptitude.

Because biden followed advice from his experts. Got it.

Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. Who the hell knows. I'm sure some dude on twitter knows the entire story though.

Seriously, why couldn’t Biden invent a plane that flys at 100,000 feet elevation to just snag it out of the air?!?!?

Besides the issue with planes flying that high, what if they fuck up and send debris raining down on a 7+ mile populated area...

Extreme high winds plus thinner air at higher altitudes is not a recipe for precision.

I do have questions about why the thing wasn't taken down when it was over parts of Alaska and even Montana. I don't worry as much about what the Chinese were able to collect but more so about how it escalates the tension betweent the two countries. I look at it as more of a middle finger to the US than anything especially with the US announcement about expanding access to Phillipine bases.

It sounds like the US were jamming any transmission, so no real downside to letting it continue to operate? They may have been learning how/what China was attempting to do in the meantime.
