China: Taiwan Tensions

how many birds can fly that high? could an eagle or hawk be trained to grip the balloon strings in its talons?
Highest known bird altitude is 37,000 feet. Altitudinal pussies compared to a balloon.

I think some drones can operate at that height as a max ceiling, but once again would then somehow also need a capture device and most likelihood is a crashed ballon and crashed drone.
“BIDEN WASTED BILLIONS IN A FAILED ATTEMPT TO RETRIEVE A STUPID BALOON AND LET LOOSE SECRETS OF MILITARY DRONE CAPABILITIES!”

No. Especially at 60,000 ft elevation, where this balloon was floating. Only plane that can safely go that high is the U2, a light, difficult to maneuver, spy plane. 2&2 is asking, demanding, that the military invent new technology and deploy all within 3-5 days. You can make wild claims that next time we should be ready with a high elevation retriever plane. But imagine if Biden sent a pilot up there in a plane exceeding safe elevations to trap and tow a giant balloon, which had never been done before and the plane was not designed for and the operation ends in tragedy.
Negative birdman, the pattern is full. The fucking Concorde could cruise at 60,000 feet 50 years ago with commercial passengers. You don't think there are subsonic military planes that can easily hit that elevation now?

This fucking guy.

Right I forgot about all the Concordes that the military owns and flys regularly. Just fly a 50 year old plane at the max altitude 2 times the speed of sound to snag a balloon. What could go wrong?

This was released last week right before we found out about the balloon? There are no coincidences...

There is no way to please these people. If Biden had shot it down earlier, Fox & company would have just complained that he should have shot it down over the Pacific before it even reached the continental US, that we were needlessly provoking the Chinese, that we should have let it stay up longer to learn its "secrets" and determine Chinese intentions, etc. They're not complaining to make a point, the point is to complain no matter what Biden and his administration decided to do.
Agreed. And to be fair the "other side" would have done the same to a Republican president. It's a no win situation when you're sitting in that seat.

You guys are idiots. 'Merican exceptionalism is real. We could have made any number of these solutions work. Unfortunately our comander in chief is just a socialist old dummy. Let's go brandon ! !

It sounds like the US were jamming any transmission, so no real downside to letting it continue to operate? They may have been learning how/what China was attempting to do in the meantime.
Agreed. And it's not like the military didn't know of it's presence. They had time to "cover" shit up or hide anything they were doing. I mean let's be honest, it's not like the Chinese didn't know where our military silos and bases were.

I would love to be a fly on the wall in the Chinese military headquarters. I kind of wonder did some dudes just launch it and say "fuck it, let's see how far this thing makes it before the Americans do anything about it."

This kind of reminds me of what we saw with how incompetent the Russian military was once the rubber actually hit the road in Ukraine. It's easy to build up a big bad image of Russia and China because they are so opaque, and our military-industrial complex has a vested interest in making them sound as scary as possible. But when you have an autocratic country with a cult of personality leader, they are going to be a lot shittier than you expect at a lot of things
