Wake Forest 2023 baseball season thread (Deacs end historic season with extra inning loss to LSU: Final record 54-12 and top 4 finish nationally)

if we’re gonna lose, today isn’t the worst way. it took some bad luck to only get the three runs imo and obviously atrocious defense to give up the lead we did.

He’s got like 3 HR in the past 18 games and 16 on the season, so yea.
Brock gets fucked at the plate a lot for some reason. Clemson stands out. There’s been other times. But he has a major league eye in a college game. I have been happiest when he has been opportunistic at the plate and driven the ball to right field for example. I really can’t say how this will play out but I know it we’re playing in Omaha it will be because of pitching AND hitting not pitching.

Kurtz just about knocked the dust off first inning and getting cecere back should help. Would have liked to see how today went if we had scored a few more early.

We also got like 6 hits off a guy with the best ERA in the league. Just a weird game.

I get you and I think overall this wake team wins a ton of games in any conference any regular season. But we didn’t beat ourselves today UL did. We scored two runs.
Part of beating ourselves today was the fact that we only scored two runs given the number of guys we stranded on base in the early innings. I wasn’t only referencing the HBPs and errors.

But you’re right in the sense that Louisville deserves credit today. They could have easily folded early on and accepted the sweep but they didn’t.

Fair. But the runners on base is chronic not just beating ourselves today. It’s an issue that has been covered by elite pitching. It could be argued that our weird weekend last week and the subsequent adjustments to our starters at UL gave us the series win. If Rhett had pitched Friday we could have lost Saturday and Sunday given our bats Saturday and Sunday.

i think 90% of hitting with RISP is just how you hit normally. either way, i think we put up much better contact today than louisville in terms of hard hit balls and got some bad luck. i’m sure we’ve been on the other side of that in previous wins though.

it’s amazing that we just beat a top 10 team in a road series and feel like we left something on the table.

once cecere is back and healthy, i do think it might make sense to sit houston for a better bat (move bennett to 2b) at times, especially with sullivan on the mound who isn’t a GB pitcher. can always do defensive subs if we have a lead.

with lee and cueto hitting better, that would really extend the lineup (i still believe in reinisch’s bat).

imagine bennett-reinisch/katz-lee/cueto as our 7-8-9 hitters.

I thought we hit the ball better this weekend than we had in the past. Hopefully with our main guns back, we will be rounding into form just when we need to be.

UVA closes the season: @ND, vs Duke, vs UL, @GT

If UVA finishes up 9-3, WF would need to close 7-5 to win the ACC, barring one of a few teams winning out

This week:

Wednesday 6 pm Liberty @ The Couch ACCN+: Liberty is 17-18 on the season. Liberty is 2-3 against Power V conference teams in midweek games: W @ Duke 8-6, L WF 5-12, L Duke 3-7, L UVA 1-4, W VT 7-3
Friday 6 pm @ Pitt ACCN+
Saturday 4pm @ Pitt ACCN
Sunday 1pm @ Pitt ACCN+

Pitt is coming off winning 2 of 3 at UVA. On Wednesday, Pitt will play rival WV at PNC Park.

After the Pitt series, WF will have played 9 of 12 games on the road.

Baseball America keeps WF at #3. From BA (impressive feat for the Deacs for winning the series at L'ville):

Wake Forest rolled to a quality series win at Louisville, becoming the first team since Miami in 2021 to win a road series at Jim Patterson Stadium. Righthander Rhett Lowder struck out nine batters in seven scoreless innings Saturday to clinch the series. While a loss Sunday snapped the Demon Deacons’ 10-game ACC winning streak, they are still firmly in control of the conference race.

BA Top 10;

1. LSU
2. FL
3. WF
4. Vandy
5. Arkansas
6. S. Carolina
7. ECU
8. Coastal
9. UVA
10. Campbell (first top 10 ranking in school history)

Other ACC teams ranked:

13. L'ville
16. Miami
17. UNC

My grandfather is in Campbell's HOF for baseball. Played one season there before getting drafted (into the US Army). At least into the 90s he had the highest single season BA (.413). He started his career at unc, but he always said he left because they had people do your tests for you there. He had a massive brain tumor removed when I was a baby, so his memory essentially locked in in the early 1980s and before.

that is incredible. Credit to the guys on the mound, but we need to give Muscara a nice raise. The improvement in pitching and defense has me optimistic, probably to an unhealthy degree
This Wake staff is deep with talented pitching. "Rake Forest" gets last year's loss at MD regional. Rake Forest plus this year's deep staff of excellent pitchers should mean a trip to Omaha.
