If you could change any rule in pro sports

also, time between pitches is ludicriously short. i don't know what it needs to be but it's gotta be almost to the point where it's too short.

remove the charge call and make the hand check legal again

Yeah, but a charge also can take place anywhere on the court. It's not limited to directly around the basket.
There are plenty of good articles explaining this and presenting alternatives.
Let me clarify exactly what I mean by a “charge.” I don’t want offensive fouls to be eliminated from the game. There obviously have to be measures in place that prevent offensive players from just lowering their shoulders and plowing through defenders on their way to the rim. I don’t want post defenders to be helpless against someone like Shaq backing them down with reckless abandon, nor do I believe LeBron should be allowed to steamroll Steph Curry on the perimeter. My gripe is with the plays in which help-side defenders run to a spot on the floor, plant their feet, and grab their nuts because they know they can’t make a legitimate play on the ball. In other words, the Marcus Smart defense.

Just to clarify, eliminating the charge does not mean that all offensive fouls should be done away with as well. If anything, this change would give referees the ability to focus on the other types of offensive fouls more closely. Off-arms, lowered shoulders, moving screens, player control fouls and the like would all receive more attention. This would allow referees to officiate the plays more firmly and accurately.

The charge isn’t really a basketball play. I know we’ve tricked ourselves through lore and grainy black-and-white clips that this is a true sacrifice when trying to play defense. It’s really not, especially not anymore. Not with today’s athleticism. The charge is a bailout call for the defense. It’s a game of Three-Card Monte where you’re encouraging collisions as if this were some kind of goal-line stand in football. The alternative would make for a better basketball product, but the league seems so set in its ways on whether or not to change the rule (or even consider it) that it’s willing to create bad situations time and time again.

i'm sure we'd really reduce controversy by deciding whether something is a "pussy charge" vs "true offensive fouls". in addition to the current reviews, we also have to decide which of those it was?

I like the idea of legalizing kicking in basketball; what if you doubled the points if the foot was the last body part to touch the ball? would create an all new level of dunking if you add in flips

Dude, a charge is a player control foul.

I'm not a fan of the flying backwards 40 feet from the basket charge call, but man I love seeing a guy rotate correctly, get set, and draw an offensive foul from an offensive player driving to the basket.

This guy could play for me any day. Players need to learn to jump stop.

seems like at the very least, charges where defenders use their hands to protect their crotch should be outlawed vs them having their hands up, you know, defending

I can get behind this.

If you took away the charge the Boston Celtics would never win another game and Giannis would score 900 points per game
