Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

I don't trust FSU leadership, alums, or Florida politicians and education leaders, but I've got to think cooler heads with prevail here. Taking out a massive loan just to switch athletic conferences is a bad bet. The teams leaving now are leaving for a bigger payout, not a bigger payout to pay off debt.

Again, it must be asked.... where is f$u taking their talents to play if the sec has said that 16 is enough for now and have not "invited them in" and the big18 looks to be full as well??
That’s part of why I believe no one in the ACC is taking them serious. If F$U thinks they are such hot shit, they can stay independent like they used to be, because if F$U is so awesome, teams will be begging to add them as one of their OOC games

Get FSU to pay $280 million and let them out and waive GOR. Pay each remaining ACC school $10 million/year next two years on top of current distributions (presumably less for ND). Add Stanford and Cal but they come in for reduced share.

Stanford just too good of a school with too many resources to ignore. Helps keep a ND rival. Not sure FSU has anywhere good to land and if they do it will be for a reduced share of Big 10 like Oregon. Will take them at least 10 years to get back the exit fee. They flounder and it gives UNC/UVA/Clemson pause (which should happen slightly anyway with increased distributions in short term).

UNC is key. They don’t want to leave. They have long been the big draw of the ACC and have lots of power already. I cannot imagine they can stomach being a second-tier draw with minimal power in a football-first conference.

ACC needs money and time. Striking a good deal with FSU helps both. If UNC/UVA/Clemson decide to get out, ACC is over.
$280 mil? That’s far lower than what any full buyout would be. It will be closer to $500 mil than $280.

ESPN's role in this would be interesting. Obviously, ESPN doesn't want to renegotiate the current contract with the ACC, but on some level, they must recognize what a sweet deal they have. I wonder what the P/L statements look like for ESPN on the SEC vs. the ACC. Allowing the ACC to dissolve isn't in ESPN's interest and losing F$U to the Fox10 can't be good for ESPN. The conference will want to know the financial impact of F$U leaving before pricing a buy-out. Would ESPN provide some assurance that the current contract remains unchanged in exchange for steering F$U to the SEC? The net would be a larger per-school payout by ESPN without the network having to renegotiate the current contract.

TL/DNR: The buyout negotiation stakeholders will be the ACC, F$U, and ESPN. The win-win-win may be to move F$U to the SEC while keeping ACC contract payment levels stable.

The WF's men's soccer team hosts Cal this year; Cal plays UNCG on the same road trip. We will see if that Cali to NC road trip robs the Cal athletes of their student athlete experience.

Well they'll get an education on what a shithole city looks like when they visit Greensboro.

Agree that the holes hold the key to ACC survival. Like what we're hearing from bubba in the meantime.... but who knows if he's telling it straight.

I hate FSU as much as anybody but I really think y'all are nuts if you don't think the SEC is gonna jump on the chance to take FSU and Clemson when they jump ship from the ACC. I don't find the "where will FSU even go?!!?" hysteria persuasive at all.

August 15 is the deadline for FSU, WF or anyone else to give notice that they are leaving the ACC or they are stuck in this terrible little conference for at least two more academic years. So, FSU has a week to put up or shut up. That said, fully expect FSU to breakout the same rants again at this time next year.

The only real option for Crab Leg U would be the Big 10. Why would ESPN want to pay them more to be in the SEC when they have them on the cheap right now in the ACC?
That's what I'd be thinking as well with f$u to the big 19.

And clem's son to the sec if the GOR is somehow defeated.

I've said this before, but last year, a ESPN executive buddy of mine (still there) told me the two ACC schools the B1G and SEC were interested in were UNC and UVA. At that time, it sounded like they DGAF about Clemson/FSU.

UVA was/is puzzling. He also called the USC/UCLA stuff happening way before the rumors even started (and we all told him he was crazy).
