OFFICIAL WAKE FOREST FOOTBALL v. ELON thread

Meh, first half was as expected. We looked flat on both sides in the second half. I think that game tells us zero about the season. We’ll start 4-0 and see what happens. Mitch can run the offense but not surprisingly needs some game action and definitely needs to be making quicker decisions.

Agreed, Mitch is a solid athlete and competitor and I have no worries that he’s got the goods and is the perfect example of a gamer who just needs those reps, which will pay off.

I think Mitch will be fine once he gets the timing right. That will come with more playing time.

The line of scrimmage is probably going to be an issue all year on both sides of the ball, particularly the offense, although we didn't run much (any?) slow mesh, so not sure how much we were actively trying to put on tape. Not being able to run the ball against Elon is never a good sign though, no matter how big they are.

I think Elon will win 7-8 games in the FCS, so they're no 1-10 VMI. Disappointing second half, but glad some of those things happened last night instead of next Saturday against Vandy. Clean it up and get better.

Malik is a legit pro prospect and one of the faster downhill safeties I've seen in a while at Wake. Just a menace in the run game.

These officials absolutely refuse to call DPI on Elon
especially when you see the one they called on UConn vs NCSU in the endzone to keep their drive alive. . .

the refs refused to call DPI, despite DBs not turning around and grabbing arms all night.

The TD that Banks had, that DB #3, was literally hugging him, holding one of his arms down. . . SMH

It’s weird to me that Currie hypes the game day experience but doesn’t focus on that obvious component.
insert this comment regarding the taste of the food from our new vendors. . . . its an even bigger component of "game day experience" IMO

I don’t understand how we don’t get calls even in the most obvious situation where we should be “respected” against an FCS team. It’s like refs have it ingrained in their brains that they’re not going to be overly generous to Wake Forest even when we are not the underdog.

Yeah, the lack of DPI calls was pretty frustrating. I'm glad that wasn't in a game that was close.
Some were just comical, like when Grimes was just shoved down a full second before the ball arrived.

There were a few where the defender was going through the receiver to make a play on the ball and probably had contact early. I’m fine with those being let go. It was just the two or three plain ones that were beyond ridiculous.

Agree. Qb is far down the list of my worries.

Take away the pick 6 and if a couple of those DPIs get called, we probably wouldn't be talking as much about our OL problems. The "close" game exacerbated our line issues and run game, not to mention the freaking running clock (hate the new clock rules). Elon clearly wanted to focus on shutting down the run, pressure Mitch and have their db's play very physical. With pass interference not being called, it allowed them to come after us. It didn't help that Mitch hesitated to throw the ball at times and our OL wasn't picking up the delayed blitz.

The weird part about the game to me was that, even when Elon got within two touchdowns, they kept running down the play clock. It was like they were still trying to end the game as quickly as possible. Not going for that 4th and short was a poor decision too.

Size of the O-line isn't the issue, it's the athleticism to stay in front of people. Size is an issue on the D-line, mainly in the middle. Pointer and Williams look like big D-ends, not D tackles. They look pretty explosive for the position, but they're going to get shoved around some.

I agree. They almost played like they didn't understand the clock rules and also really didn't think they had a shot at winning. They just wanted the score to be as close as possible.
