US News 2024 Rankings (Wake #47)

I just find that people defining themselves by arbitrary geographic regions is fucking weird. I guess it made a little sense when it was the Confederacy, but that was a while ago, right? Aren’t all these states just fighting each other for car manufacturing plants and solar farms now? Or to see who can have the strictest abortion laws?

feels like SEC country is pretty ill-equipped for the climate change world

To be fair it’s not just you, I don’t really understand how “southern” makes up its own cultural brand, with all the cheap t shirt companies and bumper stickers and shit. I don’t get it. Defining yourself in such a loose vague way is equivalent to astrology to me, it’s make believe.

I mean, anything not in the north is by definition better. How many people move from Charlotte to Buffalo ? Zero.

Doesn’t bammer have a 100% acceptance rate? Congratulations on sending your kid to a party school in which it is possible they may choose to educate themselves?

But I guess if they’re willing to make tuition free for you to come out of state it’s hard to turn down.

Downside is you may become one of these weirdos defining the rest of your life’s personality by sec football and “the south”

I have multiple friends from Wake Forest whose kids go to Alabama. Some are average students, some could have gotten into Wake. The thing is, if you can get into Wake, you can go to Alabama for next to nothing.

Also, The Bama campus is every bit as nice as Wake's. The buildings are all new or as good as new, and the grounds are meticulously well maintained. Not to mention, the stadium and basketball arena are on campus. The main difference is the scale of the buildings is entirely different, including the $13 million, $39,444-square foot, Phi Mu sorority house. And Tuscaloosa is a decent little town.
Thought you were joking. Wow.

Some friends of mine have a son who went to Alabama. Bright kid. His high school academic profile was comparable to a WF attendee.

This kid and his family paid $0 for him to attend Alabama. Tuition, room and board, expenses - all covered. Since graduating from Alabama, he has attended medical school and is now an MD.

Alabama was a pretty great value for him.
Had a frat brother back in the day whose Dad was a doctor in Florida. He was pre-med and wasn’t making 3.0 at WF. He loved WF but his dad sent him to Alabama so he could substantially increase his GPA. It worked, as he got into med school at Alabama and had lots of women in the process.

For sure. Just because you have a 2.8 at Wake doesn’t mean certain graduate schools and careers should be shut off for you. And the school does a real disservice to its customers with its grading. Duke takes the opposite approach.

I visited the Bama campus during my trip to the Birmingham Bowl. Granted it was late December with the students on break, but I wasn’t impressed by the campus or town. It’s no Chapel Hill, Athens or Charlottesville. Far from it. The town was a dump- at least the part near the campus. Also visited Samford during the trip. Now that’s a beautiful campus. Actually, it reminded me of WF.

Agree to disagree on that point. Charlottesville is a nice town. So is Chapel Hill, although it’s now being gobbled up in Triangle sprawl. T-Town is fine in my opinion, and way better than Auburn.

We toured Alabama last spring. My daughter was not really interested but it was on the route. Beautiful campus. Tuscaloosa did seem to leave a lot to be desired compared to other places we visited.

It's got Dreamland, which is nice. Sister just moved from Tuscaloosa to Huntsville, which should be better.

This thread is a good example of changing times. 80K at a private school or less than 20K out of state with good numbers at an Alabama or Florida St type school. Sure Wake may be better academically but a 3.5 at Alabama trumps a 2.8 at Wake any day of the week in terms of grad school or the job market. Throw in a savings of 240K it really makes a lot of sense. Even if you have the means to pay the extra 240K is it worth it? Most large state campus are great and there is tons to do at any of those schools. Tuscaloosa is mediocre...but Winston certainly isn't anything to write home about either. Football season would certainly be more fun.
