2023 MLB Thread -- World Champion Rangers - Hot Stove Warming Up - Soto to the Yanks - Ohtani's destination unknown

Who thought MLB needed afternoon games with only 4 teams left?

That’s really how they want to grow a dying fan base?

This is how the league championship series have been scheduled for the past 20+ years or so, as far back as I can remember (anytime there are days when both the ALCS and the NLCS are being played, one is at 4pm and one is at 8pm). Do you think MLB would rather have overlapping games tonight, cutting into the ratings for each?

I’m a little surprised they don’t just go every other day and alternate series to maximize revenue

Maybe surprised they aren't doing it to maximize revenue but that would just bastardize the series format of baseball

Basically if you play just every other day then it is a 2-man rotation

SP1
break
SP2
break
SP1 on short rest
break
SP2 on short rest
break
rinse repeat

And I guess have SP3 always ready to warm up in the bullpen

I understand what it means

Officially rooting for the Phils because they appear to be the only team out of the four to not have an obnoxious sponsorship patch on their jersey sleeve. Those things are approaching NASCAR level - if MLB is going to do it, at least take a hint from the NBA and do it subtlety. I hope the Oxi Astros follow the lead of the Quickcrete Braves and get swept.

Back to MLB reality. I'm hoping that Mr. Nola brings his A-game tonight.

I don't know the numbers, but I have always felt that in a 2-3-2 format that it is imperative for the home team to start 2-0.

Trevor May retired yesterday after a fairly unremarkable career as an MLB pitcher for the Twins, Mets and A's. On his way out, May took the time to not just burn his bridges with the owner of his last team, the A's, but to nuke them. May actually had a solid last season with a 3.28 ERA and 21 saves for a historically bad team. Here are some of May's quotes from his retirement announcement about A's Owner John Fisher, who is rich largely because his parents founded the GAP stores. Some of May's quotes:

"To the A's organization and every single person part of it, I love all of you," May said. "Every single one of you except for one guy. And we all know who that guy is."

That guy is Fisher.

"Sell the team, dude," May continued. "... Sell it, man. Let someone who actually, like, takes pride in the things they own own something. There's actually people who give a s*** about the game. Let them do it. Take mommy and daddy's money somewhere else, dork."

"If you’re gonna be a greedy fuck, own it. There’s nothing weaker than being afraid of cameras.”

Realize that no one cares about the A's or Trevor May, but if you have 3 minutes, you may want to watch this. It's entertaining:

Busy evening at the Philly sports complex:
  • Game 2 NLCS
  • Flyers home opener
  • Germany vs Mexico at the Linc

Did they Flyers change their start time because of the NLCS? 6pm is atypical for weeknights in the NHL.

The Phillies are playing a particularly brutalist form of baseball right now. Their game has all the subtle beauty of a 50s Soviet apartment block. Meanwhile the mighty Texas Rangers are going to sweep the hideous cheatin’ Astros. It’s really got to be a World Series of good and evil.

Step one completed. Now on to step two. A+, Mr. Nola, A+.

I feel like people are overcomplicating things. The longer the series, the less variance in the outcome. A 3 game series is designed to effectively punish the wild card teams for not having done enough in the regular season to earn a more consistent result.

Considering the length of the MLB season and the historic value placed on winning the pennant, I really have zero understanding of why the divisional series are 5 games, allowing things like Max Fried only getting one start in the postseason after 100+ wins.

Any other gripes seem pretty minor to me. Sure, spacing out the series helped the wild card teams this year because pitchers got so much extra rest, but oh well. And the Phillies are playing insane baseball right now so they probably win anyway. Regardless, the 5 game series to end a year of dominance seems ridiculous.

How in the hell did the Mets sweep the Phils series 4-0 at Citi Field this regular season?!

I believe the 5 game series is to prevent mid November World Series
