duke Game Thread (Thursday, 7:30, ESPN)

Starting to wonder if the Clemson loss in 2022 broke something in the program, or maybe broke the staff mentally. That game might end up being Clawson's high-water mark at Wake.

Not Claws out by any means, but last night's result was not acceptable in year ten. This season is toast. There need to be major changes when it's over.

like i said earlier in the threads. The coaches have lost the captains and WRs and are starting to lose other players little by little. The longer Clawson sticks with Mitch the more players are going to walk in the off season

Losing conference record after 10 years folks. I guess this is all Wake football will ever be. Thankfully we got 7th year seniors and the best Wake QB at the right time or else it really would’ve been bleak

Today just doing the simple things wins the game easily. 2 short FGs. Dumb penalties. Ball slipping out of Mitch’s hands multiple times. They all had to combine to lose by 3 points.

MM quotes are telling…
I wonder how much he had even practiced with a glove on throwing? He didn’t look comfortable with it, the sideline throw to Banks wasn’t a very good throw. He had trouble gripping the ball in sub 40 degree weather, what the heck you think you’re going to be playing in November? Look, I feel bad for Mitch, he’s catching a lot of heat and I know he’s trying as hard as he can and what’s he supposed to do, refuse to start? This is on Clawson and the coaches. I think we should flood the Coach’s show inbox with emails demanding an on air answer why the coaches have so misjudged Griffis‘s ability to perform in games. If Kern can play against put him out there, if not roll Santino out there, I dont care if we lose by 40 and we have to watch that stupid wolf sign the Pack fans make with their fingers all day as long as we don’t see Mitch Griffis under center!!!

Our short yardage issues have been a problem for years now, and frankly it’s a tired excuse from Clawson. Sure, it’s going to be more difficult to convert when we hand the ball off to a RB that is 3-5 yards behind the LOS while slow walking the mesh - it’s the dumbest shit ever. The off tackle rushing in short yardage is also ineffective and it needs to stop (it’s never worked that I can remember). The simple play will probably work, but we just don’t want to make it easy on ourselves and choose the more difficult and elaborate scheme for whatever reason. It’s the most frustrating thing we do, IMHO. Handing it to Mitch for a QB sneak in those situations is also mind boggling when we have the RBs that we do.

One big complaint I have with Coach R and Clawson is that we don’t seem to change or adapt our offensive methodology as we get farther down the field. I get the slow mesh RPO when you have a much longer field to work with, but those same plays simply do not work the same way when the defense has less field to cover. You’d think with Clawson being driven by data that he and Coach R would change this, seeing as though we have the worst red zone scoring offense in all of FBS this year. We don’t seem to play to our strengths and instead rely on the game plan without making the necessary adjustments when things aren’t working. Really disappointed in the job they’ve done this year. Good programs don’t fall back this far after 10 seasons, NIL or not (and they both obviously messed up bigly thinking Mitch was the answer at QB, despite him playing well enough for us to win last night). I’m confident we will turn it around as we have in the past under Clawson, but we have some obstacles now that we haven’t had before.
Coach R getting a grade of F for this season.

How did the o-line grade this game? Who cares. What matters is Coach R gets an F.

The Oline actually played pretty well, Mitch had about as good protection as he’s had, which enabled him to put up decent numbers, but he still is not capable of playing at this level for a number of reasons.

I know people think I have an agenda against Mitch, and I will admit that his accuracy was better last night than it has been most of the season. If you look at the passing line 16-19 for 241, that should be a wow. That is impressive. There were still bonehead plays that cost us the game. We still only went 5-13 on 3rd downs. There were still key turnovers, there was still the indecisiveness in the pocket, and the lack of awareness. It sucks to out play a team, but then let dumb mistakes beat you, especially in a rivalry game, and playing against a freshmen making his first start ever.

Wake got beat in all 3 phases of the game last night. We cant even say we are a well coached team right now. There is no talent gap between Wake and Duke, they just are better coached and made fewer mistakes.

So Griffis in the 2nd half lost the ball untouched......TWICE. He got bailed out once. The fumble on the scramble was ridiculously weak ball security and he fumbed a snap on a QB sneak. And this was arguably his best game of the year.
Lord I'd almost forgotten about the under-center snap.
