Spurs Thread - Victor Wembanyama ROY, runner-up DPOY; Spurs pick #4 and #8

Yeah. Seems like the plan was always to not make moves and try to get another high draft pick instead of win and draft well. This team is less than the sum of its parts.

Just sucks that it looks like a really weak draft class.

Even if it didn’t, I hate wasting a year of Wemby to chase even younger talent. This team needs a vet leader.

I'm not convinced they are trying to tank for a draft pick again.

I don’t think it’s necessarily solely for a pick, but the Sochan pg experiment is obviously for developmental purposes. I just think they are evaluating what they have with Collins, Sochan, Branham, etc. And so lineups are not optimized purely for winning games.

Agree that winning is secondary to development but I don't think a high draft pick is the end goal.

Yeah. My assessment so far is all the main rotation guys are keepers.

Should be an interesting game tonight. ESPN has an article on Sochan, it's not super insightful beyond "it'll be a process", but it's Spurs stuff:

The Spurs had a players only meeting and Pop scolded the fans for booing Kawhi. Things are becoming unglued.

May be an image of 5 people and text

Wemby with 22/11/2/6/4 in 25 minutes at the Nuggets.

He's improving his post defense. Had some nice moments against joker

I feel like there was a window in which the Spurs could have flipped that heavily protected Hornets 1st or multiple 2nds for Brogdon to finish up the Dame trade. He could be helpful on this roster.

Good update on Barlow. Looks like he's doing well in Austin.

Dominick Barlow is leading the G League in scoring to start the season. He’s averaging 28.6 points and 7.2 rebounds while shooting 58.3% from the field and 33.3% from deep. These are all huge statistical leaps over his numbers last season, where he averaged 9.5 points and 4.4 rebounds in 16 games. It’s a small sample size, but so far Barlow has dominated his competition.

I doubt they'll keep him at PG that long. It's a miserable experiment that stunts the growth of this team. The best case scenario is that Sochan turns his PG lessons into being a viable secondary playmaker at SF and the Spurs finally bring in a veteran PG. But they're already well in the hole.

This isn't the way to take inventory. This team feels like less than the sum of their parts. Sochan is playing PG. Vic and Collins are taking 5.4 and 4.1 threes a game and shooting under 30%. Pop is asking young, inexperienced players to get out of their comfort zone before they've even established a comfort zone. Yet they don't want to see what Tre Jones can do as a starter before deciding he's a backup.

Meanwhile, I feel like Vassell and Johnson are still solid players playing pretty well who should be key members of Wemby's supporting cast going forward. Vassell is putting up an efficient 18.1 ppg on 49/42/75 percentages. That could easily be 20 ppg playing more time with a real PG and more efficient teammates. Keldon isn't shooting well from deep but he's contributing in other ways. He basically has as many assists as Sochan. The big question is if Keldon and Sochan can play together as wings with Wemby at C or with Wemby and Collins in a big lineup. And I don't think we've seen either that much.

Wemby is looking really good early vs. the Hawks. He's got 8/3/1/1 less than 4 minutes into the game. He's made Capela look small a few times already.

Wemby might have something personally against Capela. He crossed him up and buried a jumper over him for his 10th point. Then blocked him on the other end.

Gorgui Dieng may be working in the Spurs front office. He was sitting beside Brian Wright in the stands.
