Next Year's FB Team + Scholarship Tracker |

I think my dream scenario is that Kern sticks around and then Hecklinski comes in and is so good that he wins the job immediately over Kern. At least this seems like the best case scenario out of the realistic options for what could happen this offseason.

I suppose the transfer portal is there too, I just have my doubts that we are going to end up with a guy that we are excited to start as opposed to just rolling with Kern.

I mean this is what we did with Wolford and Hartman, so maybe not doing it this way was the real problem this season

Yep- it’s called attrition - part of college football

We're down to 3 scholarship QBs if Kern does come back, so can't imagine not adding one in the portal. Especially given how little they apparently thought of Gilliam this season. Assume the staff must be lobbying Kern hard while still trying to keep their options open for transfers and trying to have an open QB competition in the fall.

It is pretty amazing that a QB we had in the program for 3 years who was the heir apparent flamed out so badly and is now transferring after finally getting his shot. While there are probably some decent QBs in the portal, it does make me concerned that Clawson was not able to discern this after assessing this up close for three years. Clawson gets the benefit of the doubt however because he has worked magic with other QBs.

The way it's going in college football is that you're going to be managing QB year-to-year now for most programs. (And a lot of positions for that matter). I don't care who has more eligibility its about who gives us the best chance of winning with the talent we have or hope to have in 2024- not 2 or 3 years down the road anymore. What sucks for us though is that our system is highly QB dependent and requires a lot of smarts to run- it's not like we're just asking a guy to manage the game and not turn it over anymore.

It's ironic that Griffis' X avatar is Favre. Brett Favre, who is famously known as a gunslinger that got rid of the ball, no matter what, to give his receivers a chance...

I wonder what kind of negotiation Kern is having right now to not hop into the portal as well. Dude has a ton of leverage at the moment.

Hartman is the Brett Favre of college football

I mean he's graduating from college after 4 years. If his best option is at a D2 school it feels incredibly likely that he's just done with college football.

I think with the musical chairs that's about to happen in the transfer portal there will be a G5 team that is left without a good option and offers Griffis a spot. That's not a statement on whether he will do well there or anything, I just think it's likely that a school at the FBS level finds him a scholarship.

He can go down a level, compete for a starting job, play another season, make new friends, maybe win a championship and get his first year of a grad program paid for. Seems like a good deal.
