Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

I just don't think challenging the enforceability of the GOR as it relates to liquidated damages is a likely winner for FSU. The calculation for the buyout is based upon the $$$ attached to the media rights for each university. The buyout isn't inherently punitive in nature, it's providing schools with a way to leave if they want to buy out their grant of rights which is a tangible and arguably calculable number.

I'm sure they will have other arguments, but going on the liquidated damages is uneforceable argument seems to be a loser

I doubt FSU really wants this thing tried on the merits. They want to force the ACC to settle.
Just don't really get the incentive for the ACC to do so though. Just lays the groundwork for the conference's more immediate dissolution. I agree that FSU wants to just move the ball down the road, but just substantively....I haven't seen a compelling argument at all that FSU shouldn't be compelled to continue being bound by the contract they agreed to enter

FSU is really out of touch, but I will say…it’s bullshit that they’re not in the CFP and bad luck all around that Travis got hurt. As much as I dislike their antics at the moment, Wake is in a bad position if the ACC starts to crumble. We kind of need the conference to stay together, TBH and this cracks the door open for other teams to band together and leave. I’d be particularly concerned if FSU raises enough money to then break even within ~5 years somewhere else…no doubt Clemson would then do the same and I’d assume UNC would too. Not to sound too alarmist, but we are playing with fire, IMHO.

ETA: Being in the ACC has very little to do with FSU’s lack of football success, but their fans are rabid and dumb so it wouldn’t surprise me if they did something out of short-term desperation to save face.

Sure this is just the reality though. It's not going to get any better for Wake moving forward. That doesn't mean FSU's current arguments aren't idiotic.

Ok, so play out that scenario for Wake, not so much worst case but let’s say most realistic case from here.

ACC ends up with Wake, Duke, BC, Cuse, Pitt, Louisville (who will have Big 12 option I guess if they ever want it) and maybe Georgia Tech and we tack on other regional schools under the ACC umbrella to try and maintain as high profile a conference as possible?

This seems to be almost the inevitable outcome to me. Just a matter of who all gets left behind..

I think there are two likely scenarios that aren’t that different: 1) 3-4 ACC schools leave to go to the SEC or Big 10 and Wake is left with the rest. The Big 12 is not a valid option for others IMO, or 2) FSU leaves and no one follows. They don’t find a home and we’re in the same situation we’re in now.

At this point, it's safe to include SMU, Stanford and Cal

Of course the ACC shouldn't, but FSU has delusional boosters and the ACC doesn't. So, if FSU can fundraise off of this AND force the ACC to offer a greater revenue share or whatever, that is a win for FSU. Even if it doesn't get them what they claim they want they can always declare some level of victory.

I would be very surprised if the ACC offered a bigger revenue share to F$U. That would mean other schools would be voting to have less money for themselves.

Who makes the decisions for the ACC in these discussions/suits/negotiations? Just the commissioner and the front office or do some decisions require some kind of consensus from the members comprising the conference?

Where is NC State going?

If I'm the ACC, I tell them to go pound sand. But, you get some college presidents feeling nervous and they might concede something. In any event, if all FSU gets is to fundraise off of this (and they will), that's a net positive for them.

Well, I think you end up with a Washington State situation. Basically a good program without a home - which means a strain on all athletics programs moving forward.

Hopefully this all reverses course and we end up with a college football regional conference sponsored by different TV networks and companies - very similar to what Chip Kelly laid out. I think there’s too much money at stake for the marquee programs, though and they definitely would not be on board with that. I think the only way that happens is if you expand the CFP to quite a few teams, lengthen the football season, and cap the number of bowls. Or you know what, disband the NCAA for football only and appoint a commissioner who can help lead and navigate this shit show. This whole ‘every man for themself’ bullshit is going to blow up eventually.
