CT, pickles and political therapy, perfect ending.

Our kid is also becoming a free range baby. Starting to climb on/over everything. Yesterday, he managed to turn a laundry basket over, climb on top of it, and use it as a stepstool to get on top of our coffee table and try to wreak havoc. Pretty ingenuitive for 9 months. However, with these "black diamond adventures", as my blue-skier wife calls them, he's started racking up quite the number of minor injuries. A bit tough for me to just "let him learn" and bonk his head on stuff from time to time.

Bonk is a fun word, tho.
I read this post to my wife (our kid is 10 mo) and we're convinced our kid is just lazy

dude will either play with a toy that he wants or, if it moves out of arm's reach, will play with the next closest toy to him

Yeah it sucks to interpret some push back and asking for clarification as “y’all must not like me”

Kind of shuts down any possibility of a real conversation
we DO kind of pile on at times. There are some well-meaning posters who say things like "if you vote for republicans, you're telling me that you don't care about me at all." I get feeling that way, but it puts a lot of pressure on the republican voter to either exhaustively argue about why that doesn't feel true to them, OR their alternative is to abandon the discussion, seemingly "agreeing" with the original statement. Better to simply acknowledge that the first party FEELS like this, and the second party FEELS like this, and that in an intellectually honest community, both of those feelings can be true without either party being wrong.

final comment on this (i think): we have done a lot of good work in the last year of becoming an intellectually honest community. Sure we have our trolls and our moments where we're out for laughs/likes, but for the most part people are pretty genuine.

It would definitely help if Republicans just actively stopped fucking with minorities in direct and very tangible ways (e.g. no feels about it when they are trying to ban life-saving medical care on the basis of their feelings)

My anxiety hit me hard last night for no reason at all (always does amirite) and I think I slept maybe 2-3 hours between 1am and 5am. This is what I get for staying up til 1am working on shit instead of letting my brain turn off I guess.

Which is all to say I'm one foot in on minimal sleep club today.

That’s tough man. I’m going through a period of not sleeping well and I feel like a zombie. Really draining. A little edible and wine therapy hopefully will do the trick.

Does that actually get posted on the chat thread or just the political forum?

it makes it over here sometimes, if memory serves. I don't follow the political forum much and I have seen it.

In my real world I have the nickname of “The Mayor” cause everyone likes me. I end up having strangers come up to me to talk and my friends are always asking how that happens. That’s why I’ve offered many to meet me for a beer and let’s chat. If they think a Republican Christian is that scary I will show them that not all of us are awful.

how would you like someone who is going to vote for trump to respond to that? serious question.

How about “yeah, it suck’s that they’ve made that part of their platform. But they still do X, Y, and Z which I think are good for the country so that’s why I vote for them”

their choices (as I see them) would include:
1. Long winded effort to explain why this issue is superseded by other issues to them, unlikely to persuade anyone
2. Long winded dissertation about religious beliefs, unlikely to persuade anyone
3. Agree that they're a hypocrite and do nothing
4. Agree that they're a hypocrite and change their mind

obviously 4 is the one you're going for, but does that often work? 3 isn't usually going to happen - that simply leads to option 1 or 2. Granted, this is very simplified and I'm sure there are other options.

we need @Kory if we're going to communicate about communications.

fair response. but that often leads to "well, i think it sucks that you think that [paying for a war that ukraine is fighting against russia] is more important than [providing mental health care to families]

or some version of that

edit: LOL that today's republicans would support a war fought to protect freedom. this was a terrible example.

and to be clear - i like that we hold a mirror up to people here and ask them to be accountable for their positions

If someone is maybe not clear on what is going on with the current Republican agenda and how it is impacting trans and queer people I guess I'd first try and educate them on it to the best of my knowledge. If they are actively okay with it and/or encourage that kind of legislation then I know they are probably not a good person.

If they aren't okay with it, but still voting people into office that are prioritizing that kind of legislation, I guess I'd try and dig in on the why? Obviously SOME issue is more important to them than actively ensuring American citizens have the right to medical care and the right to exist. If that issue is something banal like "taxes", I think, again... that might say more about them as a person than they think, but I'll try and keep an open mind given their background or the hardships they are personally facing.

At the end of the day, I probably haven't changed any minds, but maybe I've given people one more thing to think about and maybe elucidated the real world impact of things like "Don't Say Gay" laws or banning transgender health care. IDK. Just doing my best to exist and protect people I care about.

I think NOT speaking out or saying anything and pretending that people aren't actively being hurt is not something I can personally stand by or that would help me sleep better at night.

In general it’s harder to be in the minority as you are often put in the position of having to represent/explain/embody the minority position. You’re one of a few, or in some cases the only one, upholding/explaining your view while the majority questions/disagrees/pushes back. It doesn’t feel like piling on to the majority, but it does to the minority representative. Happens everywhere, including this lovely CT.
