2023-24 Wake Forest Basketball Season - 21-14 (11-9) - KP#29 / NET#43

When I was there in December I was surprised to learn there’s a shuttle service. Why can’t students just use that to get to games?
Dogs and wives bro. They get in the way if eeeevvvvvvverything

lol TOO PAMPERED to walk among the debris in the ditch or on the narrow shoulder of a busy road and then look both ways to cross 5 lanes of traffic

It's not the best place to walk - if they lit it better and got actual sidewalks/a corridor then it's perfectly fine from a distance standpoint. Until then, it's not a good idea, especially if you throw some drinks into the equation, to have masses of students walking to and from the Joel to campus.

We debate the dumbest stuff on message boards.

Isn't that what message boards were made for though? :p

Love you Conor, and I get what you are saying with that column, but adding Monsanto would be huge for this team.

Parker is thriving in his role, but Damari has size, skill, and experience that allow him to get shots up that Parker cannot.

When you have guys like Boopie, Sallis, and Cam that can get to the basket at will, adding another knock down shooter is absolutely meaningful. As Forbes put it (today?), Monsanto absolutely gets face guarded the second he steps on the court, and that clears even more space for the guards that want to put the ball on the deck (or Carr & Reid underneath).

I think the ceiling is pretty high without Damari... But I have visions of a deep March (April?) run if he's healthy.

The team is playing great, but it's absolute insanity for anyone to think a healthy Damari, shooting like last year, doesn't take this team to a new level. He was shooting the highest percentage since JJ Redick on the amount of threes he was taking and making last year. The dude is a flamethrower and absolute nightmare for opposing defenses. And when you have to guard boopie cam and hunter already, sheeeeesh

On this team, Damari isn't going to be shooting eight 3s a game like he did last year. Dude might break 50% on threes playing on this team if he just takes his four best looks per game.

But I'm becoming more and more pessimistic that Damari is going to come in and be a season-changing player this year. I mean the season's already nearly halfway over and he hasn't even practiced yet. If we get 150 minutes out of him this season, that would probably be a win.

WF wasn't just ranked, but ranked #1 in the nation on the week of January 19, 2009, please explain how much that ranking helped WF basketball over the following 14 years?

I think you're confusing cause with effect. I don't think anyone in their right mind would state a ranking is a solid indicator of future results. A ranking is a recognition of work that has been completed and indicates a moment-in-time. But that moment-in-time can be critical when decisions are made by committees and recruits and media.

Polaroid stock traded at over $100/share at one time and reflected the market's valuation much like a ranking reflects a team's "valuation" but is not an indicator of future events. Polaroid went to $0.00.

Of course Pilchard wants us to be ranked... He's just saying it's largely meaningless.

This isn't 10-15 years ago when you needed to be in the top 25 to get your highlights on Sportscenter or to have your score show up on the ticker. Pretty much every game is available to be watched from any device.

If the team is ranked in the top 25, that's a pretty solid indicator that we're good... But it's NET (and other factors) that will get us into the NCAA tourney (and seeded where we want to be).

Being ranked is a by-product of on the court success, not an indicator/predictor of future success or accomplishment.

And most importantly, you sure as shit aren't going to place wagers based on a team's ranking.

@deacon14 beat me to it. I think when Damari comes back, it's similar to 2022 impact -- which was really hit-or-miss.

I wish that wasn't the case because A) he's been through so much in just 2 1/2 years and B) he's a joy to talk with. But I just can't see him ripping 4-5 3s per game.

That's fair. '22 Monsanto still had the greenest of green lights, but he was more of a 10-20 mpg guy in there to rip some 3s and grab a rebound or two.

I think that's a fair expectation.

But when he's on the court, for however long it is, he's going to get a LOT of attention from the defense.

And I think there will still be a game or two where he comes in to give some guys a rest (Cam / Sallis) and slams the door on the other team's chances... Right now we have stretches where it feels like we're happy to trade baskets. Monsanto is a kill shot guy in those instances.

I think it is only hit as every team will be forced to play him face up and tight opening up the floor for everyone else. He may not be super productive rebounding and D until he gets in game shape, but his size and shooting would be so valuable. We are a top 25 team now and a good Damari makes us a top 10 team with 6 starters sharing time for 5 spots along with Zach and Parker off the bench.

it's not about people being pampered. Basically nobody walks along streets where the built environment doesn't allow for it. Right now university parkway does not encourage pedestrian use so people, no matter how pampered they are, don't walk along it generally.

yeah, lots of kids would walk to campus for class (i used to walk through some random yard to get to school from crowne polo). the route to the athletic campus was/is just super uninviting.

How does redshirting work in basketball? Can you play at all and keep the shirt?

My very first WF bball game was in Memorial - against UVA and Jeff Lamp. We were two rows from the top and it was tough to see but I will always remember the sheer thrill of being there after years of Sailing with the Pilot on TV.

And I was one of those who trekked to G'boro night in and night out for bball games, through rain, sleet, ice and everything else. That was a mess but it could never happen again.

holy crap! that was my first game at memorial coliseum!! also, marc iavaroni, billy langloh,

sat in the upper level in the seats that didn't actually face the court. they faced straight. there weren't any angled seating upstairs in the corners.

No play in BB to get redshirt. Play one second, you might as well play all season.

Unless there is an injury early in the season and you play in only a small fraction of games and only in the first quarter of the season.

If you play 1 minute of 1 game, you've used your eligibility for that season. You get to do that once in a career. (Damari did it for the 2019-20 season at ETSU)

The medical exemption is if you've played in less than 30% of a team's games and you suffer a season-ending injury, you're eligible for a medical redshirt. That goes through an NCAA appeal process in which you have to prove, basically, "yes, I couldn't play for the rest of the season."

In Damari's case, I can't see the benefit of a redshirt. This is his 5th season on a college roster. He's already eligible next season (should he want it) because of his 2019-20 redshirt and because the 20-21 season doesn't count against anybody's eligibility. Redshirting him this year would be that so he could play in the 2025-26 season ... I can't imagine he wants to be a 7th-year college player.
