MBB Game 17: @ NC State -- Tuesday 7 pm ACCN

Forbes is weird with his big man rotation. It's like since he put Marsh in, he would not play Keller the rest of the night even if Burns wasn't in.
We seemed to focus our rotations around Burns, yet he barely played. I don’t understand that. If Burns isn’t in then don’t play Marsh.

I think a lot of that had to do with trying to keep Reid from fouling out. Steal as many minutes as we could with Marsh.

Keats isnt a good coach and some assistant bitch slapped Forbes tonight. He has brought in some good talent but he has been pretty grim in game. During the 10 minute double technical debacle Forbes didnt have the players huddle or do anything and so Wake wasnt ready with any kind of play. You could tell looking at team and Forbes with 52 seconds game was over. . If Wake cant beat State in that game they are a long way from being a top 4 ACC team. Forbes is a good guy but he has to coach better in game or it is NIT forever.
With this and FSU game he has revealed his weakness: he simply does not have the skill set for in-game coaching at this level. He’s a good front guy, decent recruiter, excellent at the portal - but he’s just not an in-game coach.
Our AD better acknowledge it now, don’t wait around like Wellman did with Manning —and find an in-game associate Head Coach, or let Forbes go post season thanking him for being the transition coach who brought our program back to respectability while realizing that he does not have what it takes to bring us titles.

I’m sure it’s in here somewhere, but why didn’t we put PFred in and leave Marsh out? I thought Marsh was actually ok, but our entire offense got clogged because they just hedged everything because he was no threat at the rim. Might as well spread things out with one more shooter and give folks more space to drive it in?

i was there, it was rough. You could tell that last 10 min we were taking on water badly and it really just felt inevitable by the time they came back. Also i think we would have lost anyways (and i know i’m beating dead horse) but the T sequence was wild. These are all the things that went against us in the span of five seconds:

  • no travel on Middlebrooks
  • no foul for clear out on Middlebrooks
  • pretty soft foul on Carr tbh he went straight up
  • single technical on Middle let them put in a 90% foul shooter instead
  • the other guy lightly headbuts Hunter but instead of calling it on the State dude, or just no call at all, somehow we end up with double technical and lose our best player

totally crazy. Sigh.
I didn’t get Parker barely playing either. He’s been really solid and showing signs of growth in every game. I felt we could have used him.

Cut Middlebrook some slack, he was born with the douche gene. Listening to the college sports radio this morning and Danny Kanell was talking about his nephew last night and you guessed it, his nephew is Middlebrook.

Respectfully, this is fucking ridiculous.

Trilly, a wholly unbiased insider, had this to say just a couple days ago.

Pouring good money after bad. More money for NIL, facilities does not matter if a coach lacks in-game coaching skills. How many timeouts did Forbes call in the second half? How many adjustments did he make in the second half?

We weren't setting people up for catch and shoot opportunities. Parker isn't going to really create his own shot and help against really heavy defensive pressure. Their defense and our refusal to find a way to set an off ball screen for a shooter made parker useless.

Last night’s second half sucked for sure. He called timeouts exactly when he needed to. We played terribly and he said as such and took the blame.

So many times this season we’ve made big adjustments and played much better in the second half than the first. Yes, yesterday sucked and wasn’t one of those. Still, we have one of the best coaches in the country that we should be far more worried about leaving for a better job than trying to get rid of. Just absurd.

What is absurd is thinking he has the in game coaching skills to bring us a title of any kind. He’s raised our floor from the terrible level that the Hatch/Wellman era imposed, but his ceiling is clearly limited.

I see glimpses of him being able to create his own shot. I think we’re underutilizing him.

All I know is that here in the Raleigh area I'm not going to listen to any sports talk radio today about the miraculous state 2nd half comeback win. :(

Yeah, but there's always the not hurt argument as well. Hildreth with his turnovers and bad shots does harm, Parker is heady enough to hopefully not do harm in that situation. Hildreth is a good player, don't get me wrong, but if he would just play within the system instead of playing hero, playground ball we'd be better off. Of course if Monsanto ever comes back, he can take some of those minutes if Hildreth is playing stupid.

I don't know that we've played very disciplined basketball since maybe Odom.

And the use of timeouts is about as baffling as starting Mitch Griffis all year.

Odom was a good "coach." Don't know how he'd be in today's game and system (portal, NIL, etc.), but Odom was a good "coach." A guy like Odom would be a good type guy for an associate head coach for Forbes.

This is why I had thought we had the game in the bag up 10 and Forbes' half time adjustments forthcoming....

I thought wrong.

What exactly has he done to show he's one of the best coaches in the country at Wake, other than find guys in the portal? He followed 2 absolute jokes of head coaches here, so I know it seems like he's something great, but we're still waiting for the results to show he's one of the best coaches in the country.

This team is very talented but it all really boils down to the careless turnovers and foul trouble in these losses. Need to be able to contest jump shots without fouling. Reid needs to be playing around 28 mins and Sallis around 32. Losing them for long stretches like last night was brutal.

We won games against Miami and BC thanks to in-game coaching plays late in the game. That's just in the last 4 games.
