MBB Game 19: @ UNC - Monday 7pm - ESPN

Whoa whoa whoa - let’s not act like we conquered a demon in BC. We blew a 10 point lead in 30 seconds and needed some late heroics to steal a game in front of 200 fans.
We are 1-4 on the road and could easily be 0-5 without an andrew carr corner 3.
Uga outplayed us 38 mins and we stormed back late
FSU beat us from the jump and ripped it away
State and UNC wrecked us in the second half

I get it. You’re optimistic. Fine. But don’t “factually incorrect” someone when the above are the facts.
every close win we have had was a fluke and every close loss wasn't actually close. Does that sum it up?

Good burn? Weird flex but ok.
Never said fluke - just stated what happened.

I missed a chunk of the second half, thank god, but I did notice in the first half that Carr had NO PROBLEM, posting up, backing down and scoring on the shorter Ingram.

So, do we feed Carr all night, forcing UNC to double team?

Nah. Instead, we get Boopie driving into the paint, stopping, pivoting...or Cam dribbling with his left hand into the paint, stopping, pivoting...searching...

It’s pretty obvious that we don’t have much of an offensive system. I think that’s a big part of the issue with our late game collapses. When we need to manufacture points in a tight game we really struggle. When we are locked in and playing well it doesn’t matter because the ball is moving and we are putting up points quickly.

Totally agree with the takes that it was mind-boggling for WF to fail to feed Carr as he was the one WF player with a clear matchup advantage at 6-10 being guarded by 6-7 Ingram or even 6-5 Cormac Ryan. Instead Carr took 6 shots (3 for 5 from two). Instead, Boopie (2 for 12 from the field) and Cam (5 for 16 from the field) took a combined 28 shots. Very frustrating. Also, if UNC doubles Carr, there is likely an open WF player behind the arc, which would have led to more uncontested threes.

It's the same dumbass roll-the-ball out "offense" we had under Skip. I'm sorry, but "let ___ cook!!11!!1!" doesn't work against a legitimate coach unless there is a massive talent gap.

Have to agree that we outmatch most teams with our offensive talent, but we seemingly have no strategic adjustment for teams who can guard us 1-5 with tight ball pressure. Watching us in the half court vs State and Carolina last night was painful.

You're an idiot.

Even with RJ Davis going off on the open looks (which, yes, I am sure that Forbes wants better defense than that), UNC was 17/30 from mid-range (1.13 PPP), and 5/15 from 3 (1 PPP), so they were getting .13 more of a basket every time we allowed that to happen instead of a 3. So even in a game where Davis absolutely cooked us, and most of them were open 2's where we provided little resistance, it only comes out to that.
this is obviously valid statistically but this does not really account for things like a long rebound leading to easy points or the fact that UNC was able to set up their defense (including a press) so easily by RJ’s parade of 2 pointers. Just like the state game, we lost because we decided to allow the opponent’s best player to have wide open two pointers and he made them all. At some point make them shoot threes - if they make those, tip your hat.

i think some people are almost telling on themselves a bit here.

we run pretty intricate sets in pretty much every half-court opportunity which we need to do to offset the lack of natural playmakers we have.

one guy on twitter does some breakdowns and occasionally talks about us:

but a lot of the time a defense is able to stymie those sets (they have smart coaches, too) so we are left for individuals to create. i think you can mistake a lack of playmaking and quick ball-movement for not having a structured offense. but our offense is pretty good despite that.

I think the problem with a lot of comments after every single game is twofold:

1. People never give credit to the other team - anything we do well is all us, and anything we do poorly is all us too. To say we don't run an offense and just have a "DO HIM" mentality is just tremendously incorrect (as IAI just pointed out. There are definitely times where the plays break down, or we try to force it, but a lot of that credit (especially last night), needs to go to UNC for preventing us from running our stuff.

2. People just don't watch a lot of other teams play college basketball and hold us to unrealistic expectations. Our current enemies for 2nd in the ACC all lost a home game in the last 72 hours. Losses happen, and it's hard to win on the road. Hell, last week, 7 out of the top 10 teams in the country took a loss.

Not sure what to say if anyone thought we had a good chance to win this game. Carolina is a lot better than every other ACC team, and its not really that close. Maybe Duke if they get their stuff together, just based on talent.

It's a bit of wake up call, that we aren't that close to being a top-team. This is the first game the entire season we have gotten truly roughed up. It's also probably the hardest game we will play the rest of the season. Doesn't really affect anything about our tournament chances.

Agree with this. Hate to give them credit, but UNC is really good. Recent Davis editions, just didn't play hard (even that team that went to the NC Game, played soft in the regular season), but this team guarded WF better than any team all year. Add in RJ Davis is having an ACC POY type of year, and he is playing with 4 guys that complement each other, and UNC is tough. Tennesse is a legit top 8 team, and they played at UNC, and never led at any point.

That said, as good as UNC is and as hard as they played last night, WF should have played a better 2nd half.

It's probably also the best viewpoint that we can get on the ACC as a whole, who a lot of people keep defending. We are at worst, the 4th best team in the ACC right now, and we might be 2nd or 3rd (probably 3rd behind Duke), and we got ass blasted last night in Chapel-Hill.

I don't think Duke is as good as they are ranked, and Clemson has had a really rough ACC start.

UNC has over a 70% chance to win every single game they play in the rest of the year aside from at Cameron (49%). They are head and shoulders above everybody else.

And is it just me, or is this UNC team much better on the defensive end than they usually are?

It’s certainly not just you. Haven’t seen them much this year but they were relentless and aggressive on defense. Way different than their usual MO.

Also, went to high school with Brian Geisinger. He's one of the most knowledgeable sports guys I know. Really nice guy even though he went to State.

Reid had good post position on a shorter guy (not Bacot) a couple of times as well and didn't get the ball. I don't know if it is not emphasized or if our guards struggle to see that option and/or make the pass.

I do not understand the timing of Monsanto's minutes in the second half.
In the first half, Monsanto gave the team a boost with his 3 point shooting at a critical time, helped erase a deficit, and gave the Deacs a 1 point lead at the half.
In the second half, when the Blue Goats got the lead up to 10-12, the game was still winnable and I do not understand why Wake's staff did not turn to Monsanto to give the Deacs a shot at getting back into the game. Instead, he sat on the bench until the lead was up to 20+ and the game was basically over. Then he was inserted into the game and actually played until the end.

I know there was a lot of handwringing over why Parker wasn’t playing more last night - and I’ll highlight why.

Whe was on the floor for 14 minutes. We got outscored 40-19. 40 points in 14 minutes. Not all his fault, but they were targeting him and going right at him a lot during those stretches as well. And his offset, namely his ability to shoot, was neutralized by a Carolina team that didn’t help off him and didn’t respect him trying to create his own shot.

The perils of trying to play big minutes in a high level game as a freshman.
