I'm probably also awful at the floor stuff because it requires ab muscles and I don't think I have any.

y'all are not really convincing me that this is something i want to do.
How do you run marathons with no core strength?

RTQ has done way more than i have. but i'm with her on this. i have zero core strength. it's one of those things that you're supposed to have as a runner to prevent injuries and keep your form correct, but running doesn't actually help at all. it requires cross-training to develop any core strength. and most runners i know HATE to cross train (not that they WON'T cross train. but they don't like it)
Yeah that's what I meant. I didn't mean how did the marathon now develop them, but more of a how are you not killing your back and running upright with no core strength.
i do tend to have some lower back pain. i've started (finally) doing some ab work recently and it's helped. but yeah, my back used to hurt a lot, especially after long runs.

If you're having back pain, why not work some on strengthening your back?
Doing just ab work won't fix a lack of back strength.
um, yes it will.
the vast majority of lower back pain is caused by weak abs. and i AM doing all sorts of strength training now, which is working both my abs and my back (and everything else along with it).
none of this is the point, however. buckets had just asked how RTQ ran marathons with no core strength. my only point is that most runners hate to cross train. so most have a severe lack of core strength. it's not the way it SHOULD be. but it's the way it IS. after just having to come back from an injury, i'm doing a significant amount of cross training to keep it from happening again, so yes, i am working to fix it. but the ab strength is definitely key. the problem is generally not in the location where the pain actually is (like, for example, i had a problem in my right foot. but the main cause of it was a weakness in my left hip)
Man, I can't wait to move back to NC for the cheap bikram alone. Single classes at my studio run $18 and you can get it down to ~$16 with a 10 class pass (that has to be used in 3 mos.) $20 for 20 classes is an awesome deal even if you only do half the classes (or even just 3). I'm like Awar and prefer the floor (I think just because of savassana) and never felt like I was working out, but had serious abs and way more toned muscles when I had a regular practice (and no back pain which had never before happened in my life). I really do intend to get back to a once a week at least practice when we get to GSO...Awar, is your place in K-vegas or gso?
